Thunderbird Club

My wife has banished music stuff to the basement, for the most part. I even bought a guitar that I had hoped to leave upstairs so I would play it more, but that's downstairs, too. Ah, well. I have my subterranean realm, she makes sure it doesn't leak out. She's probably got a point, since the house would be overrun with my toys if she didn't make me put them away when I'm done.
my wife tried that…..

At the Java Owl coffee shop this morning I met a professional artist who may do some commissions for me-

No sooner that he left, my next neighbor set these books down-

An eclectic group at a coffee shop called The Java Owl in Webster, TX, a couple of blocks from NASA-

Turns out that he is an interventional neurologist who not only gave meaningful feedback on the psychiatric aspects of my novel (sci-fi/fantasy genre), but also bought a copy of my graphic anthology-

Mind you such encounters are few and far between, but I am thankful when they happen.

I’m sure that many of you have had similar experiences in different fields and venues -

Come to think of it - this thread is like an online Java Owl-
Except I don’t believe we have a brunette as cute as the one in your pic stopping in here.

The Foundations have less mids and are a little bigger sounding IME. I like them on a G&L which has tons of mids baked in. This is not to say that are hallow. I have the NPS.

This is what I got back from John H. at SIT with respect to Foundations:
The Foundations were designed with tonal balance and string flexibility in mind. They aim to sound less like an "angry piano" and more like a good old fashioned bass guitar. The Foundation Nickel variety is slightly brighter than our Power Wound series, and the Foundation Stainless will be slightly less bright than the Power Steels. The Foundations also have new core-to-wrap ratios resulting in a string that is also easier to bend. For what you're describing, we would personally recommend trying the regular Foundation Nickel variety.

Mmmmm, not sure i wanna sacrifice mids.

We were practicing a new song last night and I was wishing I had one. A fretless would really sound ideal given the tone and feel of the song. I think I would have to have a Pbass for a fretless. A Pbass fretless and a touch of the old Phase 90 would sound fantastic.

David Gilmour used a Schecter parts Fretless P-Bass for the intro and bridge of “Hey You” from The Wall-

Perfect is so different for each of us. And is the result of so many variables it can be overwhelming. Player technique, the bass, the pickups, the strings, the amp, the cab, pedals, and some even believe the cables that connect it all make a difference.

There is a guy in the GP these days with a lot of posts who keeps wanting to change things up because he isn’t happy with what he hears through a GK Legacy. I doubt he bothered to read the manual before deciding to move on.

If you have the time, tone chasing is a fun hobby. I’ve learned a lot through trial and error. But it can be expensive. And it takes time away from becoming a better player.

I like the resonance and harmonic overtones from certain notes that I’ve gotten from my TC Electronics RH 450 and the RS210 cab with various basses -

Not something you would hear in a standard mix or might not even hear solo in a recording-

Not a fancy high end rig, but it’s there, maybe it’s the salt air-

Have you decided on pickups for the blue one yet?
The white one has ChinaBuckers in it, I have a spare set of Epiphone 760ProBuckers and a spare set of Gibson Tbird Reissues. I’ll try each set to see which sounds best in this bass. Recall, I still have a ‘66 NR that I’m building (at finishers right now) so whichever pups I don’t use in the BaCH will go in the ‘66 NR.

At the end of the day I’ll have four NR birds all fitted with the same strings and similar pickups for a nice little shootout.

2021 Gibson NR with the Gibson neck pickup closer to the neck than the vintage bird wired vol, vol, tone.
‘66 North NR with Gibson or Epiphone neck pup at 1966 spacing, wenge neck, wired vol/tone, vol/tone, master vol
White First Gen BaCH with neck ChinaBucker at 1966 spacing, wired vol, vol, tone
Blue Second Gen BaCH with the Gibson or Epiphone neck pickup at 1966 spacing, but wired vol, tone, three way switch.

Should be interesting to hear the pickup location differences, wiring differences, and the wood selection differences if any.

Not that I don’t think there are players and owners of Fretless instruments here- but I occasionally respond to new threads asking for thoughts and opinions on the subject-
Just getting back into some fretless work after years of not playing one. I picked up an Eastwood fretless on the cheap and it plays and sounds very good, not the level of my old Pedulla Pentabuzz (which I stupidly sold) but at a fraction of the cost it’ll do.

That said, I’m considering installing a pickup up against the neck. Thought about a vintage Gibson sidewinder from an old 1960’s EB but not sure I want to spend that money on this bass. Also considered a Dimarizo One and a Thunderbird pickup. Any thoughts from the gang here? It’ll go in this, so chrome or black would work fine…

i remember this bass in your response to my query about the bass in this video- this one has a pickup close to the neck- have no idea what make it is, but it reminds me of yours-

Speaking of fretless playing- for me it depends on what the song calls for-

Out of three songs I’m working on - two require a Fretless five, and one requires a fretted four string tuned to standard Drop D-
