So... Not Gibson good but still okayish? I saw a Gibson thunderbird in Japan and I feel like it was bigger than this somehow.
They are all pretty much the same size. Some slight differences in horn sizes and shapes. My 2015 Gibson is a bit smaller on the lower rear horn compared to my Epiphone Thunderbirds.

What have I got myself here. I'm in China and I got it second hand. Obviously with the amount of small guitar factories here is easy for it to be a copy but it probably isn't. It's got a metal nut which seems like something that would be skimped out on if it were a copy.

I don't love the sound by itself but it sits in a reburied recorded mix quite well.

What is it and are there any basic upgrades I should do? Pickups and pre?
It’s real. A Epiphone T’bird Pro. Epiphone by EMG pickups (I think that’s right) and a preamp.
They look great and are well made. I like my nephews natural one, though I think it is a little heavier than my Gibson.
A lot of people suggest a change of pickups and/or preamp.

see below

It's actually a good candidate for changing out the pickups and the pre amp, my Jackson Bird has EMGs and while it's not everybody's thing they really cut in mix.

In my best raspy blues voice…It made a grown man cry

The worst part was that this particular "we're so special.., so f-ing special" SF bar/club wouldn't even give a band ONE free drink ticket per member.., if fact... not one free drink ticket AT ALL. They are part of what sucks in the SF music scene. I won't name them... but they are in the Haight. So getting back to the topic... I paid full-overprice for their (can't even recall what brand it was) scotch and then never got a chance to take a second sip...

Gig-wise, I start every set 100% straight. If only one set - a beer or two after if I stay the whole night. If we get there early (which we like to do) I might have a beer before we go on - but that's it. A free-form jam session - whatever... but for a rehearsed show? - 100% straight ahead. I didn't grow up in the bar-scene - only became familiar with it through playing in bands. Still not my "Cheers-esk" lifestyle, but definitely part of my playing music live life-style. As in - I totally understand/respect the importance of bars/clubs in society and even if I don't normally frequent bars, I love being part of the "entertainment" aspect of that social tradition.

I have the EMGX 9v active system/pu's in one bass (my Supersonic) - it sounds... great. EMG makes great-sounding pu's - hands down. For metal players, guitar & bass - they are the default brand. (or were... I don't keep up...) But I know that for metal guitarists - they are very clean/neutral, which allows those players to add all their pedal effects cleanly. Many pro players have used EMG because it's reliable and controllable on the road through FoH. FoH is ready for whatever... but will always love ease of mixing. EMG is all about that and it's why they are one of the top brands to this day.

Can someone with one of the modern non reverse birds tell me the distance from the bridge saddles to the bridge side of the neck pickup?
I will try to remember after work, if no one has provided the answer. I'm guessing it's the same as the Gibson Reverse--which means it is definitely closer to the neck than the originals. Which has driven me crazy(er).
