get so annoyed sometimes……the MB rig worked perfect last night but decided to do weird stuff today……Class D amps plain don’t like crappy power……no prob, pull out good old fashioned Class AB stuff and all weirdness went away…..

So is your Evo500 similar to my 550 Spyder other than a few details? (compression, sub, eq) I set it a bit differently last night - you can see it in this pic Dave posted. Got a lot more girth out of it.

Treble/Bass/Mid controls 12:00 - Gain - 3:00 / Master 9:00 - lower switches engaged other than Mid boost. A good setting for the '64 II - air was moved.

no, it’s the Klystron preamp, totally different. The EVO has one output card (550W@4Ohm) just like yours….the Klystron has two of those cards with two separate outputs…..biggest problem with those is they are not bridgeable and there is NO warning…..that oversight has worked to my advantage over the years……
they do sound goooood though…..

I've always been curious about power conditioners. My Ashdown isn't rack-mount so I'd have to cart a separate unit. How is it different than a multi power-strip with a surge protector/cutoff?

The EVO has one output card (550W@4Ohm) just like yours….the Klystron has two of those cards with two separate outputs…..biggest problem with those is they are not bridgeable and there is NO warning…..that oversight has worked to my advantage over the years……

I'm happy with my Spyder - but am aware the Klystron is a premier Ashdown unit. Dave has one?

Got to play with the JC just now. :drool:

The stock pickup is very nice sounding. Tone dimed and switch at 500. Beautiful.

The Dark Stars earn their name. There is just something about the fullness of the sound of that hollow body. It certainly is going to be a top pick to play and an easy reach to first fret.
My Goldtop JC is one of my favorites. With the Gotoh GB350s and the headstock reduction it's about 7.5 pounds and has no neck dive.
And it sounds great. Jack did a really nice job with that pickup design!

In truth it's not, and a fused/breaker equipped power strip may be better protection than a Furman. There's lots of photos of rack mount power conditioners with the lids off on the Intardweb.

A surge protector does just that. When a surge (higher than normal voltage) comes through, the surge protector absorbs it (converts it to heat as it shunts it across the power lines, to ground, or both)- up to a point, past which the component - responsible for protection - typically an MOV (metal oxide varistor (variable resistor)) - fries. It does that and nothing else.

A power conditioner cleans up the power. Ideally, wall power is a clean sine wave[1]. In reality, there is a lot of noise on the lines. This comes from a variety of sources - electric motors brushes, electric motor start capacitors, arcing across switches or problematic circuits, radio frequency interference (RFI), etc. Noisy power bleeds through power supplies into a lot of electronics. Anything with high voltage gain (preamps, boost/distortion pedals) is especially susceptible, as are Class D solid state amplifiers. A power conditioner gets you closer to that ideal sine wave for less problems. As part of that, it also protects against surges.

Some units only protect from spikes, others do that and filter out noise.
I find the Furman SS-6B reduces noise from LED lights, so I always bring it to gigs.
But if the voltage is sagging or there's no ground, a surge suppressor isn't going to fix it.
If you wanted to completely protect your gear, a line interactive or double conversion UPS would do it:

Of course thats too much extra weight to lug around for gigging:D
 
I don't recall - do you have bad / missing grounding? A power conditioner generally can't help with that.
Yes sir, the builder tied the ground to the neutral buss. There is no 6’ pipe driven into the earth and ground strapped to it. Going to have an electrician install that.

In truth it's not, and a fused/breaker equipped power strip may be better protection than a Furman. There's lots of photos of rack mount power conditioners with the lids off on the Intardweb.

It completely depends on the unit you buy. Some are extremely basic and just have a few small capacitors or something along those lines. Others have serious circuitry in them.
 
Well, the little 9v battery adaptor thingies arrived. They were s'posed to be here Friday(not SW's fault), but arrived Saturday after I'd split for the gig.:mad:Grrr. No more gigs until 7/12-13(just as I start the prep for 'up periscope'). Oh, well. I'll have plenty of time to f---* with them and see if they're gonna do what I want them to do. Nice that there are 2 in the pcakage.[usual hi-def pic]

I had a powered monitor hooked up to the cheap furman get fried like ten years after I bought the Furman. The power conditioner did Jack squat to protect it. BUT .... Furman replaced the conditioner, sent me a much better one and covered the repair of the monitor. So it was pretty well covered in the end.

I opened up the original cheapo and the new one and you can definitely tell the difference in the circuitry on the two. One looks like certified snake oil and the other looks like something pretty serious.
