I need a sanity check here please. Are the pickup wires here as simple as the neck and bridge wires going to the respective middle lug on the pots, and both soldered together to the top of the neck pot? And can I assume the silver braided cover is conductive and the black not?

Yep, pretty much correct.
The silver braided wire is your pickup ground wire and the black woven cloth wire is your pickup hot wire. Both wires are conductive but the black woven insulation on the hot wire keeps it insulated from ground or other hot wire sources. And therein lies a concern in your control cavity.
The hot wire should only contact the center lug of each respective pot. But in your case the black woven cloth hot wire on the center pot has been pushed back and the exposed wire is dangerously close to grounding out on the grounded lug next to the center lug. Ideally you should push that cloth back down to approximately the solder joint of the center lug and then gently bend the hot wire such that it will not come in contact with any other wires or pots if the insulation should slide out of place again.

Did they do some record runs in those over the years. I seem to remember them resurfacing every so often over a long time period.
yes, very rare, never went into production…..shocked when I saw it, they used it to test some diesels as well….

I’ll add that center pot black wire makes me nervous. Just a bit of unraveling from vibration could lead to a short to the lug beneath the insulation end. That lug is grounded, so the bridge pickup would no longer work.

Not sure, but I do live pretty close to some hobby shops. I play airsoft and the guns use some pretty small screws, springs and bolts, so I may even be able to cannibalize something at home for the parts I'd need
I used to play AS many moons ago. Had some really fun times with that. Did a lot of weekend op games and spent entirely too much money on it. I ended up trading EVERYTHING I had, which was two and a half AEG's and all my mags, batteries and chargers for a 1988 Charvel 4b. That dude has no idea what a score he got. Well, maybe he does now if he's ever had those mech boxes apart.
