Thunderbird Club

Been wanting to post this for a few days now, I know I only occasionally post but I do try to pop in every day... I just want to say that this is one of if not THE best groups here on TB, just a great group of Bassists. The talk is informational, friendly and entertaining! Very welcoming and encouraging. My thanks to everyone and special kudos to our leader and Queen! I'm not trying to suck up, I just genuinely enjoy reading this thread! Slainte!

I would think you could leave out the switch just fine - unless you also move the jack to side, then you could always fill the old input hole on the front with a toggle/kill switch...

Originally I was going to move the jack to the side but since this has a momentary switch that you have to hold to kill the signal added to the face already (why you would add one like that is beyond me) I changed plans a little. I want to remove the switch and jack and route for a strat-type input that will cover the spots of both existing holes and it will tidy up that control area. Then I will install the TBX in the tone spot to see how it sounds. Later I may change the layout to a stacked vol/vol/, TBX, kill switch because I really do like having that ks option. I will post pictures of the before/after of the controls once the new jack is installed. Looking forward to testing out that TBX :bassist:

So did you add the 3 way switch as well on your Epi? I kinda want to avoid adding a switch, but can work with it if I need to.

Yea nocturnal. I added the 3-way switch to my Epi. I know I didn't need too, but I like using the neck pick up for the beginning of a song then switch quickly to the bridge for heavier parts of the song. Since i only practice with ether my Drummer or the Guitarist each session. I need to be able to cover both rhythm and lead during our songs.

I just drilled another hole for the switch. I didn't want to relocate the input jack to the bottom.

Good luck bro, ill try to post a picture of a before/ after or the wiring. if u need any help fill free to ask. Also while your at it. Try copper foil your control panel. That's my next mod to my bird.

^ Yep, think of us in Australia.
Bass Centre has 2014 Birds for $2700- the importers (Gallins) have them for $2556. RRP is $3300.
Bass Centre has advertised 2013s (by order) at $2300.
With the dropping $AU I would be surprised if the 2015 Birds will be much under $3400 here (street), unless there is discounting when they fail to sell.
I reckon second hand Birds just got more expensive here.

I thought all Thunderbirds from Gibson and Epiphone had tilt back headstocks. Is that not the case?

Is this a response to my previous post about the old and new Epi's?

Both Epi's and Gibson's have a backwards tilted headstock, whatever the model...

However the new bolt-ons from Epiphone and the Pro-V also have their headstocks pointing slightly downwards on the treble side, as opposed to all other models - it's a subtle change, but quite noticeable when you compare the models side by side...

I ordered a TBX pot after reading about the uses here. I have a Jazz Special so I am already familiar with it, but never would have thought to try it on the Epi Birds. I'm going to install it in my new-to-me sunburst Epi. I will let you know my thoughts after I do it.

Andy, could you do some recordings of your Epi played with a pick with the tone full on and full off before the TBX mod, and after the mod?

I'm quite curious about how radical the changes in tone will be with this mod, and haven't found any good demos online.
