Interestingly back in the touring days I played only with a pick. Ran into another band on the road, well known regional band (a couple of the guys later ended up in the band Kansas). Bass player was one of those "real bass players don't use picks" types, made me feel like a cheater. Always thought finger style looked cooler anyway. Quit touring, quit playing for about 3 years, when I came back decided I'd learn fingers. I have a couple songs I play with a pick now but it's not a natural feel. More practice...

I flog a 2015 on a regular basis. It's not the only 'Bird I own, and I'm not completely convinced it's the best 'Bird I own. But it is the one I play most. So there you have it.

It's not that i don't want to be able to play with a pick, for the life of me, i just can't get it down.
As much as i prefer the good ole fingers and feeling the strings, i admire the persons the can play with a pick.
Not as easy as it looks.

That tone on 13 kills. He recorded it with an old svt head not the hartkes he uses live. Old p bass I believe with geezer pup. He's definitely another heavy plucker! Mike Starr from Alice was like that, very percussive in his attack. I myself was always a drummer first so I tend to think that way. Alot of my heavy hand came from crap gear early on. Old Peavey stuff and to get any kind of grind or punch had to really dig in.

Coming up I was a big fan of bass players who were either the leader or up front. Harris for certain. Loved the high register stuff like the middle of ancient Mariner. The pedal tone stuff. Peter Steele of type O Negative did the same kind of stuff as well. Alot of counter motion witch I learned from cliff Burton. Love when the guitar goes down with a progression while the bass goes up!

With the band, I love my .73 yellow Dunlop Tortex best, helps the bass find it's rightful place in mix - I'd never make it through a night of our music playing fingerstyle, no stamina left for that. Fingers sound fantastic at home tho.

I'm off and out for a few hours, here's a stuffed '06, actually me travelling light, 1, 4x10, two basses and a lot of wardrobe :roflmao:
It'll be a fun drive, the Subie has a 3 week old set of Goodyear's on it - My kind of Highway Star!

I like the 73s at times, usually the 88s as they're flexible enough for speed but still stiff enough to dig in.

I agree with ya and love all those guys, not a fan of Starr but we do play AIC...I usually warm up with the part in ROTAM that you refer to, loosens me up as my now 50 year old hands get a little stiff sometimes, but I can still play faster than hell, it just hurts like hell!! Hence the scotch...LOL

Usually either Jim Dunlop Vinyl or Maxi Grip picks in the sizes .73 , .88 and 1.00 - All depending on song, sound and speed of song. Occasionally I might also use a 1.00 Dunlop Ultex Triangle on the bass too.

.73 and .88 mostly for the guitar, and .88 and 1.00 for the bass.

Play with a pick. When I play with my fingers, it might sound okay but I feel I'm lacking a certain 'assurance' or something (can't quite find the right word). I have impaired nerve function in my right hand, which among other things means no slapping. Seeing as I'm not Larry Graham that's no loss to the world. So while I grip the pick tightly, it's not as tightly as the olden days when the 1mm triangular celluloid pick was bent between my thumb and first and second fingers.
