Thunderbird Club

Merry Christmas my beautiful people.
Didn’t know us Germans celebrate on the 24th.
That said. Wishing my extended TBird family a happy and healthy one.

There are some really tasty ghost notes in his drumming. This isn't my thing, but it is another example of how good his drumming is. I think there is a bit of echo or something on it. He was a master of using effects to get great results.

Do you know how they found that sound?

Phil was booked by his former bandmate Peter Gabriel to play on the latter's third solo album. Peter came with a request that Phil would not use cymbals on the album, which urged him to think differently when it came to approaching the songs. The producer was this young guy named Hugh Padgeham who clicked with Phil right away.

And then magic happened when Padgeham wanted to call up Phil through the mics on the mixing desk while Phil was tuning up his drums, the direct feed came out in the monitors and had this thunderous sound to it. Knowing a good sound when they heard it, Padgeham, Peter and Phil began using it straight away.

It was the very first time that what became known as the Phil Collins drum sound was put on vinyl.

I'm not a comercial user nor do I have a product to sell. However, I will become a comercial user if and when I have a product to sell.

I love my Epi VP for a bunch of reasons. First because my kids surprised me with buying for me for Fathers day this year. Second, with a set of Roto 66 strings I can nail the angry piano thing. Third, is just the cool factor that has always been off the charts for me.

I do have a frustration though. I love the classic look of the two piece bridge and tailpiece but I miss the ability to easily fine-tune the setup. I am remedying that issue with a set of bridge saddles that I have designed and am haveing machined. The saddles will allow for individual string height adjustment and will be easily retrofitted to my existing bridge.

Does the club think that there is a market for such a retrofit kit?

That is an interesting idea for a potentially useful mod! There have been a few who have expressed frustration with the saddles. I don’t see it as much of a market though. It seems most are content enough with it as is. But who knows. Post pics when you’re done and then you can gauge the interest around here, on BassChat, and maybe the Thunderbird Facebook group. You might talk to @godofthunder59 who made his Badbird bridge for vintage Gibsons about his experience developing a mod to improve intonation adjujustability for 60’s Gibsons.

I'm pretty sure I have spent a whole lot of money to wipe out any value of the Flamingo and the fretless Thunderbird. That's OK, since I'm pretty happy with how both turned out. Waste of money? Maybe, maybe not. I don't plan to sell either, so as long as I'm happy with how they look and sound, it's good enough. We spend lots of money on our house. Because of where it is, zoning, and the way the Seattle real estate market is these days, it probably would be worth as much or maybe more if we just let it fall down. We pick our battles, I suppose.
Your house is beautiful Will.

That is sort of a deep cut. There is a tab on Songster (I’m not much of a tab fan), I don’t know how accurate it is. It may help…
That’s in 3 parts. The first two parts aren’t where the bass lines are at lol
Third part is MIA…

I’ve pedaled through it. Seems fairly inaccurate.

I do think the sections transcribed for the other instruments are close.
Yesterday I started reading through and playing those part on the bass via the transcript just to listen them out. If nothing else I’ll scab together a palatable tab

It is making me grow, that’s for sure

I haven't needed individually adjustable saddles on my basses with 2 piece bridges, but I could see them being useful for a Fenderbird if the neck has a different radius.

I’m interested. But how does one easily retrofit when the current bridge is made to not be disassembled!
