Thunderbird Club

What’s everyone doing for the holidays?
My wife’s twin & her hubby are here for a week along with our Alaska daughter, her hubby, & our 3 grands, so the house is full. Lunch with our son & grandson yesterday. We have at least 6 others coming for dinner tomorrow, and various visitors our daughter wants to see Thursday. (I’m not playing tonight at the service.) keeping an eye out for the right discounted (used, blem, etc.) purple sparkle.

Riding the train with Santa.

Tonight we are doing abelskivers, a round Dutch pancake. That is coming from Mrs Bents side
Our tradition when I was a kid were Bohemian potato pancakes that my maternal grandmother made. I miss that.

But for years now we’ve been doing the tamales thing from my wife’s Mexican side. We picked them up the other day from La Moderna Bakery in Whittier (there was a NPR piece about them last week). We’ve been getting them from there since forever. They’re still good, but not quite as good as they were back in the eighties/early nineties.

And the bigger issue for me is not having enough travel for proper intonation.
When I was placing the 2 piece bridge on my Orville, I measured my 2017 VP for reference. The bridge on the VP is placed too close to the neck by 1/4". It works with my strings, but I can see why you run out of room with heavier strings.

Just chilling up at the mountain. The wife and kids are there all week. I have to work except for tomorrow. It’s tough when it lands in the middle of the week. Otherwise we would have had a big crew there as I would get my parents and bring them over and have my brother’s family there too. Hopefully next year.

It’s supposed to rain today, but it is sadly too warm (in the 40’s) to have a white Christmas.

Sorry you have so much work. I have last Friday through Jan 1 off (5 holidays, 4 PTO). I have a big project deadline looming or I’d have taken the rest of next week off.
Enjoy what you can! Any other musicians in the fam?
70s here. Just happy it’s not raining hard (though we need the rain).

I'm not a comercial user nor do I have a product to sell. However, I will become a comercial user if and when I have a product to sell.

I love my Epi VP for a bunch of reasons. First because my kids surprised me with buying for me for Fathers day this year. Second, with a set of Roto 66 strings I can nail the angry piano thing. Third, is just the cool factor that has always been off the charts for me.

I do have a frustration though. I love the classic look of the two piece bridge and tailpiece but I miss the ability to easily fine-tune the setup. I am remedying that issue with a set of bridge saddles that I have designed and am haveing machined. The saddles will allow for individual string height adjustment and will be easily retrofitted to my existing bridge.

Does the club think that there is a market for such a retrofit kit?
If you’re not already a member, Welcome to the club! Post a pick of your bass to be an official part of the clan.

As for the VP bridge mod, heck yes! Any inexpensive (and easily returned to back stock if needed) fine tuning I can do on my bass to get the most out of it is certainly welcome.

Where this option would really be a life saver would be on Fender neck equipped thunderbirds with the two part bridge. Admittedly, those are very few and far between so really not worth the fab or marketing effort (which is the reason I’ve never done it) but it’s a must on the typical FenderBird basses. The Fender neck radius is drastically different than the Thunderbird bridge, that results in a perfectly set up D and A string with nice low action but a higher than wanted G and E string action. Filing the D and A bridge saddle grooves is the only option right now with this bridge and that neck. Not a huge issue except from an aesthetics standpoint you are cutting thru the gold/chrome/black coating creating a less than perfect solution. Adjustable saddles would be the right way forward.

Consider me your first customer when you have something to sell for the VP bridge.

Here’s the Fender neck equipped basses I’d install them on (one in chrome and one in gold hardware)…

My wife's brother/sister in law and other bro are coming over for dinner. I'll be grilling striploin steaks.
Tomorrow I'll be chilling with my girls, watching classic Xmas movies we have been collecting.

I'm "working" on the days that aren't Stat holidays, but there's not much going on.
Besides working on my Bach, I just got a C4 synth pedal, which has 4 voices - effectively a Eurorack synth in a box. So I'm learning about synths and how to build sounds.

Had to look it up. We call those New Yorks down here.
