The quick answer is - to the best of my knowledge the iPad only has one I/O port, the USBc port. It’s used for charging and it’s also used for output to an external speaker. Apple in their infinite wisdom deleted the phone jack port on the newer iPads, you use a dongle adapter to go from USB c to a 3.5mm phone jack that you can then plug into an external input jack on your stereo or other playback device. So, no, you can’t charge at the same time as you record with the iPad.So a question. I want to do some simple recording. I am confused by all the available choices for an interface. My son gave me a gift certificate for SW that I’ll put towards a device.
I want an interface that will connect to my iPad with the USB-C port. I’ll just be using Garage Band. I would really like to be able to charge the iPad while using it to record. This is where I get confused. Can I do this? What devices and connectors do I need? I don’t want to break the bank, but I want a setup that will work.
Thanks for the advice.
You could possibly do it if you have an iPhone. The newer iPhones have the magnetic charging connection on the back of the phone that allows it to be charged in a docking station without having to connect to a jack. I assume this leaves the jack free to be used for input connections.
I reserve the right to be corrected on this post.
