Thunderbird Club

So a question. I want to do some simple recording. I am confused by all the available choices for an interface. My son gave me a gift certificate for SW that I’ll put towards a device.

I want an interface that will connect to my iPad with the USB-C port. I’ll just be using Garage Band. I would really like to be able to charge the iPad while using it to record. This is where I get confused. Can I do this? What devices and connectors do I need? I don’t want to break the bank, but I want a setup that will work.

Thanks for the advice.
The quick answer is - to the best of my knowledge the iPad only has one I/O port, the USBc port. It’s used for charging and it’s also used for output to an external speaker. Apple in their infinite wisdom deleted the phone jack port on the newer iPads, you use a dongle adapter to go from USB c to a 3.5mm phone jack that you can then plug into an external input jack on your stereo or other playback device. So, no, you can’t charge at the same time as you record with the iPad.

You could possibly do it if you have an iPhone. The newer iPhones have the magnetic charging connection on the back of the phone that allows it to be charged in a docking station without having to connect to a jack. I assume this leaves the jack free to be used for input connections.

I reserve the right to be corrected on this post.

This is incredibly sad. David Johansen is so talented. I got to hang out with him once and he was such a nice and funny guy. I think he deserves whatever people can give.

Wow. He is the last of the what are to me the original Dolls. I was sad when Thunders passed all those years ago. And our Thunderbird playing brother Killer’s passing hit me really hard. Then Sylvain a few years ago. Now this. Horrible news.

I still crank this all the time. An all time favorite.

I did just get an iPhone 16. I suppose I could record on it and share the file to mix on the iPad.

We’re in the same boat brother.

I currently play Pandora or YouTube thru my iPad into a small combo amp or I play a CD from my CD player into a GK 210 combo amp and in both cases I accompany them with my bass played through my practice rig.

I wanted to continue along that line but also be able to capture the combined output for posting. Thinking ahead I assumed I’d also want a mic feed in case I wanted to add verbal content. So I needed an interface with a minimum of three inputs (music feed, bass feed, mic) and output to two monitors and a recording device with garage band. Here’s what I got…

Since I’m using my iPad to play music I can’t record on it at the same time. So I’ve decided to buy an Apple tablet with garage band as a dedicated recording device. I Just need to get my butt in gear and buy the laptop.

The final piece of the puzzle will be a visual recording device. No idea there yet, maybe something like a GoPro and YouTube account.

Take everything I’ve posted here with a grain of salt. I’m just feeling my way through it and taking a best guess, who knows there may be much better ways of recording and posting. Is it as simple as just using your iPhone? I don’t know.

These are supposed to be fantastic interfaces, as well as being reasonably priced.

I've tried GarageBand on mobile and found it really frustrating to use compared to the Mac version. But I don't have an iPad. I have an iPhone and Mac and never saw the need for anything in between.

That's a bit much even for a person with no taste like me. Last time I was in El Paso, I stopped at a Tecovas outlet. They had a pair of really comfortable goatskin boots that were factory seconds. There was a pull at the top of one of the boots that had come undone. I came close to buying them, since they felt great. Only problem is that there was no way to get them home in my luggage. So it goes. My wife would not have been as enthusiastic. I know my limits. Also, I couldn't think of when I would actually wear them much. I wear sneakers off the motorcycle and riding boots on the motorcycle. That's pretty much all the shoes I have. I don't even wear workboots much any more.
That’s what feet’s is for!
You wear them home.

Like the looks of those. Kind of looks like a "roper" style heel and a "french toe" as they are called here.

These are some of my French Toe boots (but traditional heel).

Each boot is made from a single piece of leather, sewn at the back, and with elastic sides and pull tabs. They used to kill me yo get them on but that gets better with use. Yearling leather. Almost a Cuban heel. I have to get a certain variety because it is extra wide, I can’t get into the normal ones. These only come in two colours so now I’ve got both. They should see me out, they have a refurbish offer so they’ll fix them up once they are too tatty to wear.

The only thing I don’t like is the price. Way too much money. I saved gift vouchers up and got them so that it didn’t seem so much $.

If I win lotto I’ll go to Adelaide and take up the made to measure service and have a pair in kangaroo skin.

Quite a few people use iPhones as a primary recording device for Youtube. Personally, I'd look at a mirrorless camera of some flavor or a dedicated iPhone (or using one you already own) before using an action cam like a GoPro, but that's just me.

As for questions about being able to charge an iPad and use an audio interface at the same time, I've never done that myself so I can't speak to that with any certainty, but I'd assume you need some sort of USB hub or docking station if that's ever going to work.

The newer iPads are pretty powerful in terms of computing ability, but from what I understand, Apple kind of hobbles them with the software they make available for it. Probably because they want to sell you a Macbook too...
I have a flip phone that I use...as a phone. All that other 'stuff' you mentioned is so far outta my knowledge(and budget), it might as well be in Cantonese.:wacky:
