Thunderbird Club

For a long time, my CP was my fave! It's still my easiest to play but for most of the music I play, my others sound better. I love the white w/ black hardware (I have a Hipshot bridge as well). I still really like it. I'm glad yours is working so well for you. Great photo, and you and the bass sound great, too.
Thank you very much for the kind words. It is still beyond me why they stopped making the instrument.

Fun little bit. That song is recorded bass through a Geddy Lee YYZ preamp to an mxr m80 with a bit of compression. Both effects are on their distortion channel but with a low blend to maintain low end clarity. I really love the Sansamp and it has become my always on pedal nowadays.

The same setting on my fender type basses sounds absolutely gnarly.

PM me, we can do it over a video call if you want...
Thank you kind Sir. Briefly this morning when I had some time I did as you said. Both make the same noise/sound, with the 300 being a little louder. I touching the tip, same sound (more of a hum than buzz). And, kind of shorting the cable by touching the sleeve and then the tip. Both make noise when this is done. I had input/output low as it was early. At lunch will try again, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's not something in the house since neither one as quite when I "short" out the cable. (Said the person who knows nearly nothing!) Taking it to rehearsal tonight to see how it does in another location.

Hello friends,
I currently own the E1 Thunderbird (2021 model made in China). I recently found a listing of the IV model (made in Korea).
I started thinking about switching to that model assuming there would be a noticeable improvement but being unable to do an AB test, should I actually expect to see and hear any improvement over the newer one I own?
They will sound and play pretty much the same. Not sure what improvement you’re looking for? Stainless rounds sound best with those pickups if you’re finding the tone too dark.

IIRC, mine is a 2012. Every standard Epi bolt-on I have seen seemed identical. Custom Shop Limited Editions vary. (Edited wrt CSLE. Thanks, @Stealth57 )
For whatever reason, the black tuners in two LECSs I have and the Epi Blackbird seem better than the standard tuners in the Goth I have. They otherwise seem identical in appearance.

Gremlins.

Well, mostly the fact that it’s made in China but other than that, not much to complain. I do care about how instruments hold up their value and my guess is that. Korean one would do better in that regard but I might be wrong. Also, if the build quality of the Korean ones is superior then I’d gravitate towards them.
Some people claim that the Korean made Epi Birds have a higher build quality. I have never been able to compare a Korean model to a Chinese model so I don't know how accurate that may be. Korea does have a better reputation for build quality so it may be true.

I'm still in Mass, my wife and I are involved in discussions  about when to leave for Lima, (Peru) and whether to just move there or go back and forth which is what I want to do. Seasons are opposite so we could be in eternal summer.
hear you.....one year to retirement, this is looking tempting.....

Technically, the base Epi Thunderbird was called a IV from 1999-2021. The E1 was officially introduced in 2024. AI says there is no difference other than the name. I guess that makes sense given what they did with the VP/60s/64. My IV is 2018.
It was officially introduced? I missed that. But it was showing up on retailer sites before 2024.

The only difference would be the size of the neck. A much earlier Korean one would have a baseball bat neck, unlike later Korean and pretty much all of the Chinese ones, which are more similar to Gibson and other Epiphone Thunderbird necks.

"New and improved"(and costs more)
That's why I still have the old one. It's showing no signs of its age, except for dents, missing paint, and things like that. It sounds and acts exactly like it ever did. I used the new transmitter as an experiment at band practice last night. If anything, the updated code or whatever it is, sounds just a little clearer. That's true of both the old transmitter and the new one. Not that it sounded blurry or muddy before. There's also the possibility that I'm imagining things.

Yeah. It was showing at dealers before that, but not on the website. My recollection is that it first appeared around the holidays in ‘21. And IIRC, someone here actually spoke to someone at the Epi CS number who disavowed any knowledge that the E1 even existed.
