Thunderbird Club

Swanky Spider update:

As noted yesterday the Burny sounded pretty good, but on the quiet side
Checking the DC resistance at the jack, both pickups were around 3.6K. Hmmm.... time to pull the pickguard.
The pickups have a ground, red & white. Red was wired to the pots and white was capped off nicely with a piece of heat shrink.
Guess what white to ground measured? 7.2K! So the bass was wired from the factory with permanently tapped coils

It only took a few minutes to rewire it to use both coils and now it sounds much hotter (and juicier ) - go figure!

@GBassNorth you may want to check your Burny bird
That would explain a lot. So many projects in the works right now I never bothered to dig into the reason for low output.
A photo of the control cavity would be great if you get a chance.

BTW - I still need to officially commission you to create that pink Breast Cancer Awareness Tbird sticker for my Burny Bird that we talked about a long while back. I’ll send you a PM with some artwork in the next couple of days to get the ball rolling if you’re still interested in doing it.

From what I hear from those who retire is they have less time. Weird.
Seems like it at times!

That’s so far my experience. Hundreds of deferred honey do’s. Multiple doctors appointments. It is weird. But the significant lessening of stress has been a good thing. I’m feeling better and am much happier.
I understand this. You know you are stressed when working but I didn’t quite realise just how stressed until I gave it all up.

Busy is a different kind of busy now.

A good busy.

Way impressed with Billy Thorpe having seen concert footage of him in the late-70's. Sounded as good live as in the studio- "Children of the Sun"!!!
I said it before, but I’ll say it again - Billy Thorpe was rock hero to me, and to many other Aussies including some of those that became heroes themselves.
I’m glad he got to have some measure of success in the US as well.

Rest Well Billy.

Billy went through phases of different styles. He grew up a contemporary of the Bee Gees up in Brisbane - like them a £10 Pom born in England, migrated to Australia as a kid - then moved down to Sydney as it was a bigger city.

Did the pop / beat music thing in the early and mid 60s. Had the distinction of holding no. 1 on the singles chart while The Beatles toured (conquered) Australia with a cover of Poison Ivy.
1964 clean handsome Billy.

He Also had a hit with Somewhere Over the Rainbow, of all things. Actually he has a great voice.

He then went into heavy Billy. RSO management and a new version of The Aztecs, the “Sunbury” Aztecs because they ripped at the music festival.

Mama - live in a TV studio

Then into a solo artist Billy

Then out of that into an adult rock Billy, back with The Aztecs with a bit of funk on this one - Mr Bassballs.

Is @Chucky Stiletti our TB Mr Bassballs ?

All that BEFORE the US and Children of the Sun.

And I didn’t even post the song he is most remembered by…

Myself have said it before and will say it again, that another denizen of Australia, Iva Davies and Flowers/Icehouse who inspired me to take up the bass guitar with such haunting songs such as "The Kingdom", "Paradise", and "No Promises". Thought they were better known for upbeat songs like "Street Cafe, "Hey Little Girl" and "Electric Blue", it was the former atmospheric soundscapes that really grabbed me, both lyrically and sonically.

A shout out to Guy Pratt for his fine fretless work on two of the three-

Yes, I saw Flowers live before the name change and bought the Icehouse album (by Flowers) the first chance I got.
Do I have it correct that it was just reversed in overseas markets and it became the Flowers album by Icehouse???

I don't know how many major regrets you have in life, but add passing on that to the list! :smug: Slot pole too! I don't know if the L2ks back then sounded as sweet as the L1k I have, but I would love to find out. I would take my '81 L1k over any G&L I've even had or played. Very special.

He sure got a lot or air time around here. For a while seems you couldn't go a day and not hear him some place and some way. CofTS was a get in the car and crank it song if there ever was one.

On the Mama clip, was a young Fletch the drummer?!!! That was my first thought, though certainly not true.

They were better in some aspects, more time and care were put into the instruments, the wood was WELL aged a decade or more.

It's Wednesday...........
