Thunderbird Club

yeah never quite figured it out, it was either a later model 78/79, happened before, combination of both, or no one wanted it but one thing's for sure, it was brand new and I'm pretty sure I got it after we had a fire at the building where I lived which happened after I graduated high school in '82 so you're not alone, I've been confused about this for years....may have even been a 76, didn't know enough about Birds at the time to look at the logo....maybe someone reserved it and later changed their mind.......who knows....I have a pic of me playing it live (before the stupid paint job) in the late 80's somewhere...
Love to see that pic if it ever turns up. :)

After dithering between EBCFs, LaBellas, and dAddario flats for this build (having experience with those brands on other instruments) , I finally dropped the hammer on a set of EBCF 2813's for the build.

I was a little concerned that they may chew up the fretless rosewood board more than the smoother LaBellas, as they are noticeably rougher on my fingers, but online reading seems to show that's not an issue.

Also sourced my CTS pots, pickup support foam, black nickel jack, and various screws.

I already have most of a sheet of 3-ply black guard material for the guard, rod cover, and back cover, though I'm toying with doing a painted wood back cover instead.

A couple other tricks up my sleeve yet:

I've read that front-jack 'Birds had a tendency towards jack rip-out due to the thinness of the wood from the rout. So I'm planning to make a cavity-sized plate from 1mm thick copper, and mount controls and jack thru that. It'll function as a ground plane, and work as the biggest possible fender washer to spread any loads. It'll also add about 4 ounces of weight low to the tail, but that may work out as a plus.

Designing a custom "Nightbird" logo based on the family 'spirit animal,' which I'll use on the guard... if it looks good enough. I'm not much of a graphic artist even with computer tools.

But now, yard work beckons.

Question for the group, did Gibson tend toward springs, or foam, for pickup support on 'Birds? I don't see a lot of info online.

My DC Tribute uses foam. One recent photo here on the club thread shows springs.
The Epis all use foam, and I think Gibsons do, too.

Another one for George.

Sometimes things sit in shops.
I recently bought a 2012 MIJ Fender medium scale Jazz Bass (JB62M), from Japan, and I am positive it has never been owned by anyone. It is flawless, the plastic is still on the PG, pickups and tuning keys, tags still attached and the case had all the case candy. Seems like it hung in the shop for 13 years.

Nice! I'm really enjoying medium scale. I've been planning to build a scaled down NR for a while now, but other projects keep happening :)

Or the box (or bass in case) was mislabeled in the back and everyone wondered where the bass went at inventory time.

yeah, as long as it was a Gibson....I was miffed it wasn't an NR....
I cut my teeth on Gibsons - EB-3 and my '63 II. I 'discovered' Fenders later and these days I have more interest in non main-stream basses.

Like this one - based on the Dano Coral Deluxe Bass, one of my favorites -
