Thunderbird Club

I mentioned this earlier- has anyone looked into the EMG Thunderbird Pickups? Of the six models, only one is passive, and include models with J and P coils inside-

Myself would never cut an original Gibson Thunderbird to add batterie(s) and I don't prefer active pickups anyway. But others might be interested in trying it with a an aftermarket facsimile-

I actually watched this video before buying a Thunderbird. This guy wasn't shy about modifying his Gibson Thunderbird. It was interesting to see him try many different combinations of the TB active series-

Seymour Duncan Hawkbucker pu's, since the late '80s - accept no substitutes. Ask Jeff -

If free and I needed something to do - for sure I would have attended. Even though I have no interest in it - I would have liked to experience that "scene" (the performance/event and audience) to get a broader understanding of music/entertainment we are all part of. Continually having blinders on what we don't like makes Johnny a dull boy...

Horrible pic due to yellow tint from the light, but you get the idea.
When I brought it in the wife was shocked. I thought she was going to cry....

Nothing is soldered up yet. I had to take a chisel and slightly shave and enlarge the bridge opening. I wasn't getting much wood, mostly junk from what passed as a refinish before it seem. Possibly it was II initially, but didn't seem to look that way.

The WCS basket cases sometimes turn out to be MVP's -

Just occurred to me that one might not have to add a separate compartment because the active solder less pots are smaller than than the originals. I remember switching my Steinberger XT's to active and was able to fit one 9V battery in the original control cavity-
I had an active EMG P in the Ash on Maple Tbird I built decades ago. It sure was growly downtuned with stainless rounds.
I have it recorded with a band now that I think of it?

Donnie, that’s gonna be a GlamourBird when you have finished with it. Congrats!

Also, George has used some gold strings (???Optima Gold???) in the past. Maybe a consideration ? Maybe a step too far ?

George?

I rode 65 miles for the Livestrong foundation today. I hate cancer so much. It was actually ~1.3 miles farther than shown; I fat-glove-fingered starting the trip computer in the 49F temps. Not used to those yet this year! Cirrus riders & runners raised over $8,500 as well as the company paying all our entry fees. I rode with friends from work and other than feeling tired and a bit sore after, it was good. The party after was great, too. Not only was there a killer band, but the sound guy really knew his stuff. Even the bass came through perfectly!

My view from the starting line (we had VIP status due to our fundraising so were in the first wave):

Don’t make me say it again :roflmao:

One of the main reasons i enjoy playing bass, and one of my main challenges: the focus required for me to play even halfway competently pushes the rest of the world out of my head.
But the world pushes back, hard.
Bass and bicycling are similar that way.

EMG's (their low impedance active pu's) were/are especially favored by metal guitarists because they deliver a clean, neutral sound, so when adding all their effects they remain clear and articulate. I have (9v active) EMGX J pu's in my Supersonic bass and they are exactly that - clean, clear and neutral. (...it's strung w/flats) My Russian (Moscow) guitarist/musician friend who worked for Avid (formerly Digi Design - he's a sonic scientist) played all my basses at one point and picked that bass as his favorite. I don't think I ever made it growl, but otherwise it sounds/records damn good.
