Thunderbird Club

Yes Carlo filled out a customs declaration, but I also have to fill out an import declaration - so I'm paying them to work out how much to tax me.

Plus if they don't get done by the end of the month they'll charge you the increased amount that goes into effect July 1. No?

Then there's this guy....

:jawdrop: yikes! Holy helicopter scene in Dawn of the Dead! By the way that hs disappeared it's lucky he didn't raise his hand to do the devil-horns instead!

Glad to see it was the Les Paul, not the Thunderbird that got decapitated. If it was my Precision, the ceiling fan would have got shredded. That's just how that one is.
I put this through my ceiling fan once...

Just left a gnarly chip on the top/edge of the headstock. A les Paul would have snapped off in a jiffy.

That scar is proof of "my guitar is better than your les Paul"

It wasn't the preferred Axe of Santana in the 80s, as well as Colin Hay and many others, for nothing. Not to mention that I wanted one of these ever since I was given "the guitar handbook" when I was 16/17, and it was featured as the cutaway illustration for solid body electric guitars, and was mentioned as the "finest guitar made outside of the united States"

No mention was made about ceiling fan survivability. I just discovered that by accident.

Studio Birds are set neck.

Headstock looks like an Epi so at least it was a pricey Gibson. Sucks either way tho.

The rubber/foam on some guitar hangers react with some finishes. Looks like that is what happened here. My black Hamer Bird has those marks on the headstock and some finish roughness on the butt end of the bass where it sat in a stand. I think nitro finishes react to certain manufactures foam products.

Yep. I learned the hard way with my acoustic guitar. My poly basses can sit in stands. I'm real careful with my Gibson nitro. I don't let it sit in one place for very long in a stand and put it in the case if I won't be able to play it for a few days. Two years and it still looks brand new. If a guitar seems to stick a bit when you take it off a stand or hanger, better to keep it in a case even though it can be a pain when you want to play it. I'm pretty a**l when it comes to my instruments. I've gone so far as to pad edges and corners in my two main practice areas to avoid accidental dings...looks like crap. I have a ceiling fan above me in one practice area and I never turn it on when I have a guitar in my hands. So far I haven't hit the fan once. And I ever do, the fan will come down...then again, after seeing the above video, I may just take it down anyway.

Spot on!

I've experienced this first hand with cheap guitar stands. Set a 10 year old 1990s jazz bass in a stand and a couple weeks later went to lift it and the stand came up with it, just before it peeled the paint off the butt of the bass in two one inch wide swaths. Promptly threw the stand away and sold the bass. Then went through my extensive stand and hanger inventory and replaced everything with Hercules products. This was a decade ago and haven't had a problem since, even with new Nitro finishes. IIRC the offending stand was a "stage hands" stand bought new at GC. Apparently not all foam rubber is equal.

Lesson learned - I wouldn't normally try to save a buck on an el cheapo cheesecloth strap or plastic strap locks or a paper bag to transport my guitars in, so why try to save a buck on a stand or hanger. Get the right tool for the job! It might cost a bit more initially but that's the price of admission. If you can't afford the $20 extra bucks for a top end stand then you probably should have bought a cheaper bass to begin with.

Hercules is the best, those are all I use for stands and hangers. SO many reasons to use these instead of others...

Well it's official, I'm back to onebirddom .

With 3-4 inquiring buyers, one came through that was semi local and wanted to get it after work.

So I had to bring it to my weekly appointment, and I was playing it the whole time setting up some huge sellers remorse. Especially since the neck relief was perfect after my last adjustment (this is the 2015 burst bolt). Other than those high frets causing buzz up high, which is a little time with a file away from being solved, I really like that bass despite all the time I thought it had an issue it didn't actually have :banghead: still it was time to let go and move on.

Turned out to be someone from the scene who had seen us play and already was planning on coming to Saturdays show. He seemed to get a kick out of it having been played at several of our shows, and I sent him a video later too.

And he didn't grind on the price, $170 with gig bag. Now to see about finally nabbing a peavey foundation with super ferrites, or a slim neck TV silver, pelham blue or white special edition, whichever comes first in my price range. Honestly, I want my next bolt bird, if there is one, to be another MIK like my goth, so I am hoping the foundation comes next, or not... Because as much as the new vintage pro is appealing, the prospect of a possible closeout on the classic, appeals to me. For the shavo thing, the "modern" black hardware and tb pickups is a better fit, and if they blow them out, and it is within reach... I might end up in the neck thru camp. Especially if I get that lifetime warranty.

Gotta keep the gas in check though, the gigs on the books are not high pay, and I can't be spending that on non essential stuff at this time in my life. And the $200 I spent on the one I just parted with, was an example of me doing just that. So on that note. I hope I can find a sf foundation for $150 or less, or not at all since the money should be going for life expenses...

I bought a Hercules "AGS" stand, with the quick height adjustment. I heard a lot of people say that that mechanism is a major flaw and it breaking or falling apart sending their instrument to the ground. So first thing I did when I got it home was set the height and tape the sh*t out of it.

I've never heard that. I have 2.. a double and a single, been using both for over 5 years, no issues to report. Maybe I've been lucky. My LGP uses a single and a triple and no issues. 2 lucky guys? LOL.

It's probably not overly common but I've enough reviews saying that it's happened to not take the risk. Plus it only cost me 5 seconds and some electrical tape.

I use an ultimate folding stand, I love it and have had it at least 15+ years. I feel like I should have 2 stands, so when I was at storage the other day I went to pick up one of my 2 GC "on stage" stands... The type with the surgical tubing type padding. Well that had dried up and deteriorated leaving me with bare metal. I left them in storage... I will figure out some way to re pad them in the future, or just go punk rock and use gaff tape lol.

Plus they are bulky. Someday I will just have to get another ultimate, or maybe one of the smaller folding case type stands, for 3 if they make them that small. This is for stage use, not home storage/display.

Tell me if you're familiar with this sensation:

You're standing at a crosswalk waiting for the signal to cross, when some guy in a Ferrari pulls up to the red light right next to where you're standing. Your and heart, and time, both stop. Maybe figuratively, or maybe literally, your mouth drops open as you gaze. The guy sees you outa the corner of his eye, and he knows what's happening. He gooses the throttle a little just to make both of you smile. The light turns green & he launches hard, just to show you that, yes... it is everything you think it is... and then he's gone.

Well... I'm asking' ya to not take off ya bastard!!!drooldrooldrool

Is yours also a 2013?

Out of the 30 or 40 Hercules stands and hangers I own only one has gone bad.

As you noted the height adjusting mechanism on the back of the stand failed. It was a really odd failure where I noticed the spring loaded plastic handle was getting quite tacky, almost like it had been exposed to solvent. All other parts of the stand were fine. I fortunately removed the bass from the stand to try and figure out what was going on when the mechanism fell apart in my hand. Had it failed with the instrument in the stand it would have most likely been a gentle slide 3" to the floor with no damage to the bass.

I returned the broken stand to Hercules and they replaced it for free. If I had to guess what was going on I'd say it was one of two possible issues - either the plastic trigger and grip were not cured properly or the stand was a counterfeit. IIRC I did purchase a couple of my Hercules stands via mail order to save a few bucks vs GC pricing, there's an outside chance this one may have been a knockoff and not up to traditional Hercules specs.

No other issues to report on their single instrument or multi instrument stands or their wall hangers. I really do love their captive neck lock feature that eliminates the potential for the instrument to be knocked out of the stand, great feature in SoCal earthquake zones.

Think that just laying it on a table shows the care they take in interments
Yeah... the fools should be slapped... HARD... but after seeing what @godofthunder59 was able to do with a piece that would've have otherwise been under 6 feet of Mother Earth's finest... I'm a lot less worried about that than I used to be. Especially considering that Pete, up at Rainbow Music (local store) is part surgeon, part wizard, and part neck whisperer.

Those are both 2013's and yes they are everything you think they are. :)

Those necks are a bit small for those big ol' mitts you've been talking about and I wouldn't want you to cramp up. ;)

huh... wonder if that 's how Steinberger got the idea

I've had a few SGs before. One of them was walnut brown. That one started getting similar markings & discolorations, but none of the others ever did. I found a stand that had lambs wool sleeves over the neoprene supports. Problem solved. I'm certain that a crafty person could come up with a similar "home remedy".
