Thunderbird Club

Well it's official, I'm back to onebirddom .

With 3-4 inquiring buyers, one came through that was semi local and wanted to get it after work.

So I had to bring it to my weekly appointment, and I was playing it the whole time setting up some huge sellers remorse. Especially since the neck relief was perfect after my last adjustment (this is the 2015 burst bolt). Other than those high frets causing buzz up high, which is a little time with a file away from being solved, I really like that bass despite all the time I thought it had an issue it didn't actually have :banghead: still it was time to let go and move on.

Turned out to be someone from the scene who had seen us play and already was planning on coming to Saturdays show. He seemed to get a kick out of it having been played at several of our shows, and I sent him a video later too.

And he didn't grind on the price, $170 with gig bag. Now to see about finally nabbing a peavey foundation with super ferrites, or a slim neck TV silver, pelham blue or white special edition, whichever comes first in my price range. Honestly, I want my next bolt bird, if there is one, to be another MIK like my goth, so I am hoping the foundation comes next, or not... Because as much as the new vintage pro is appealing, the prospect of a possible closeout on the classic, appeals to me. For the shavo thing, the "modern" black hardware and tb pickups is a better fit, and if they blow them out, and it is within reach... I might end up in the neck thru camp. Especially if I get that lifetime warranty.

Gotta keep the gas in check though, the gigs on the books are not high pay, and I can't be spending that on non essential stuff at this time in my life. And the $200 I spent on the one I just parted with, was an example of me doing just that. So on that note. I hope I can find a sf foundation for $150 or less, or not at all since the money should be going for life expenses...

I'm thinking if the Classic is done, production of them ceased some time ago. It seems to me that unless a retailer has a ton of inventory, we'll only see a modest price cut, if any, on the remaining new ones. But who knows. Never thought I'd ever score a new 2015 Gibson for $999. That GC blowout was very strange. I was told by a friend in management at GC, not sure how true this is, that Gibson closed a warehouse and offered GC a phenomenal wholesale price on most of the remaining stock of Birds in it. So one never knows. Anyway, can't wait to hear a Vintage.

Out of the 30 or 40 Hercules stands and hangers I own only one has gone bad.

As you noted the height adjusting mechanism on the back of the stand failed. It was a really odd failure where I noticed the spring loaded plastic handle was getting quite tacky, almost like it had been exposed to solvent. All other parts of the stand were fine. I fortunately removed the bass from the stand to try and figure out what was going on when the mechanism fell apart in my hand. Had it failed with the instrument in the stand it would have most likely been a gentle slide 3" to the floor with no damage to the bass.

I returned the broken stand to Hercules and they replaced it for free. If I had to guess what was going on I'd say it was one of two possible issues - either the plastic trigger and grip were not cured properly or the stand was a counterfeit. IIRC I did purchase a couple of my Hercules stands via mail order to save a few bucks vs GC pricing, there's an outside chance this one may have been a knockoff and not up to traditional Hercules specs.

No other issues to report on their single instrument or multi instrument stands or their wall hangers. I really do love their captive neck lock feature that eliminates the potential for the instrument to be knocked out of the stand, great feature in SoCal earthquake zones.

That's exactly what everyone said (that had that problem) So a little bit of electrical tape gave me a good piece of mind.

huh... wonder if that 's how Steinberger got the idea

I've had a few SGs before. One of them was walnut brown. That one started getting similar markings & discolorations, but none of the others ever did. I found a stand that had lambs wool sleeves over the neoprene supports. Problem solved. I'm certain that a crafty person could come up with a similar "home remedy".
Buy some microfiber/terry cloth, something you'd use to wipe down your guitar, drape them over the stand where the instrument touches. Cheap, simple, and never have to look for a cloth to wipe you bass with

Those are both 2013's and yes they are everything you think they are. :)

Those necks are a bit small for those big ol' mitts you've been talking about and I wouldn't want you to cramp up. ;)
Ya know... I may have found my calling in life. It's not uncommon to meet musicians with arthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel, etc., that would benefit from having some sort of "prosthetic" that could be safely, reliably, and unintrusively fit on the back of an existing neck, to increase comfort and playability, while reducing fatigue. Carbon fiber maybe. I dunno... I just thought of it...

Uh, Fix, when you have a good idea, it's probably best to keep it to yourself until you explore the need, feasibility and cost to produce and patent it. Just sayin'. That's how Ron Popeil made a fortune. Some of his stuff is goofy, some of it is pretty ingenious.

I appreciate you lookin' out for me, but to be perfectly honest... I would be thuh-RILLED if wunna y'all grabbed the idea & ran! I have no means nor resources to pursue such an undertaking. I don't care if you make millions... just comp me a piece & I'll die smilin'! I'm even volunteering for guinea-piggin'! @Dadagoboi @godofthunder59 ... any takers???

BTW... it's pretty cool to hear that you think it's a good idea! The only downside is... that means I've already smoked the one I get for this year...

Yeah two had the rock star mentality and not necessarily a bad thing to have. I'm sure it is also hard to replace a long term member and he might have been really good buddies with him and now he has to replace him. I didn't think it was a good idea to ask what happened to the old bassist, and they didn't bring it up either. I'm not expecting a call and if I do, will take it from there. Nothing of the business end came up and I have a great deal of questions before making any decisions.
If the singer doesnt play an instrument I dont believe his opinion should count. I auditioned for a band once without hearing their material and when I got there I found out they were only doing covers and that bummed me right out fast. After a few covers the singers asks "what do you got"? and I say "original material" and he says "show us what you got"!. I start some grooves and the drummer gets right into it and the guitar player is making magic and it sounds Fn' awesome and both of those guy's are looking at each other smiling and the singer got this constipated look on his face and yells "STOP"! into his mic and says "We dont do stuff like that"!. As I walk out of the singers house the drummer asks if we can get together again and I say "not if your singer has anything to do with it". Never seen them again, never worried about it.

Was in a band with 2 guitars, drums and a singer. One of the guitarists was hopeless, he spent all his time listening to Santana and John McLaughlin and could play lead lines but couldn't hold down a rhythm to save himself. He was ousted in a bloodless coup and the singer became the second guitarist - kept the singer out of trouble and instantly made us 100% better (as well as no more hippy guitaring - maybe that's 300%).

These days I'm more inclined to a 3 piece althought that requres either a guitarist who sings or a drummer (but some people have problems with the aesthetic of a singing drummer).

I consider the P the bass with a really bad attitude. Not for the way it sounds, but it's physical aggression. Its headstock won't point toward the ceiling without heroic efforts, and always sneaks back down to female singer back of head height. With bad results. Or good results depending on the singer. It takes out mic stands in a way nothing else ever does. If I didn't keep it chained up in the basement, it would sneak out at night, steal cigarettes, and beat up the neighbor's guitar. And, it takes on superficial damage all the time. I don't know where some of the scrapes and bumps came from, but they sure aren't the factory relic stuff. It looks like it accompanied a berzerker on a raid. And, I really do try to keep it out of trouble. Nothing else I own has the same kind of unruly personality as the P.
Don't forget about it getting the other neighbor's guitar pregnant.

:jawdrop: yikes! Holy helicopter scene in Dawn of the Dead! By the way that hs disappeared it's lucky he didn't raise his hand to do the devil-horns instead!

3 piece all the way!, my drummer was singing and doing a great job of it but now were mainly instrumental.

1. Singing and playing bass is difficult (but not singing and guitaring - why is that?)

2. too self-conscious
