Thunderbird Club

For easy reference, I switched our forecast to Farenheit:

That is more typical of our Winter averages.
My understanding is the system pushed the cold air out of Canada and allowed warmer air to replace it. I'm not sure how or if that is affecting your weather or not being far West.

I finally sold a couple of inexpensive basses yesterday, so my display wall has 1 empty slot. I've decided against an Explorer. However, saw an SG for a great price. Does anyone know of a Gibson SG or shortscale club on Talkbass so I can start researching what to look for (I don't do Facebook)?
Yes, there’s an SG club. I’m in it and so are a few others here in the Thunder Dome.
My advice on contemporary SG basses is shoot for the 2007 model year when they had the Bass of the Week going on. Each week was limited to a 400 unit run, so relatively uncommon to begin with. I’ve played a bunch of SGs from the 1980’s on and found the SG Supreme from 2007 to be the best sounding one. It might be because of the thick maple cap, but it just has more definition and clarity than the solid mahogany ones I’ve tried. If you’re going to go vintage I hear the 1960’s and early 70’s are best. Very deep and dark, not as clear as the SG Supreme guitar of the week models. Here’s mine, they only came in these two finishes that year, you can see the thick maple cap on the blonde…

There’s one listed on Reverb right now…

Not a bad deal.

Don't forget the Ray (beautiful SB and maple)....we talk lotsa 7ender and even G&L but never MM.....original Rays are masterpieces belonging in the J, P, TBird, Ricky category imho...

Agree. The PreEB Stingray is a sound all its own. Heavy, yes many are, but pretty much everything was heavy back then. Very unique sound and a look that no one else has really tried to copy, so they’re stand outs. The new stuff is impeccable and the finish options are mouth watering. As a rule of thumb, they are somewhat unforgiving basses, but if you have good form, they sound phenomenal.
My 1979 (Darth Vader) with its HD150 MusicMan amp from about the same year, and along side my StingRay5 which I never really bonded with and finally sold a few years back…

Jeff has first dibbs on the PreEB

I've been thinking of exploring the single MM pickup with a preamp idea. My understanding is having the one pickup in the bridge position means you dont get a lot of bass out of it, but the preamp makes up for it.
Fairly correct. Research the original preEB preamp vs the newer ones. A lot of people prefer one over the other. I’ve had both at the same time and just couldn’t bond with the newer one. I can’t recall exactly without looking it up but I think the original is a two band with treble cut and boost but bass boost only vs the newer stuff which is three band.

Thanks George, I'm about 10 pages deep in that forum. Aside from your recommendation, I read that 2014 and prior are favored (something about PUP changes in 2015). Also, Gibson went with some combo of ceramic PUPs around '73 (e.g. ceramic neck, alnico bridge)? I'm not sure I'd want to go to vintage with the non-adjustable saddles though.

Someday I’d like to buy a bass from my birth year, maybe one of these…

…about 20 years ago, I bought a 1973 Gibson mudbucker on the bay… had no bass for it, ordered a cheap handcrafted in Korea Epi EB0, swapped the pickup and the nut…it was my side project main player for about a decade…

…still prefer this one, feels and plays better than any Gibson for me (69 EBO, 70 Slothead, 2011, sold)…

Possible but I doubt it. It’s not like we have a shortage of sharks.

Three were in Sydney - a surfer at Dee Why Beach, just north of Manly.
A kid at Vaucluse (Shark Beach of all places!)(Watsons Bay is at the tip of South Head, Vaucluse is one closer to the City on the Harbour side of the Peninsula), the third at North Steyne Beach (which is basically at Manly, the ocean side though).

Those three could easily be the same Shark.

The fourth was up past Port Macquarie, a few hundred kilometres away. Possible, but lotsa sharks between Sydney and there.

3 surfers, and a kid jumping into the water from rocks with his mates at Vaucluse. Vaucluse has a netted swimming area but the kids were not in there.

We had extreme heat, up around 43c ( =109.4 °F) for a couple of days. That was followed by torrential rain and localised flooding. Of course all (most?) our storm water ends up in the harbour or ocean either by rivers and creeks, or through drainpipes.

When I was a kid we were always told to never swim the day after a big rainfall. The water is murky with sediment and crap so there is danger in that, plus you can’t see through it easily. Unfortunately the bull sharks love that kind of murky and brackish water. I assume the fish come in closer and the sharks follow them in.

It seems like our generation have let down the next gens by not passing on this info. In fairness the harbour and ocean is much cleaner than when we were growing up, hence more fish and sharks around. Plus our elders told us a lot of stuff, a lot of which was rubbish - old wives tales.

One expert has come out in the Sydney Morning Hearald (photo below) saying don’t swim after heavy rain. He is saying 1 day after for the ocean beaches, and 72 hours for the harbour beaches.

Wait. There is a dedicated netted area? And the kids weren’t swimming in it? They sound more like stupid Americans…..

I am not sure what it is about heavy rain that would cause shark attacks. It sounds like something to find out about. Diving after heavy rain isn't ideal around here because the runoff makes visibility horrible.

Nice!

There’s an Epi EBO, not sure of the year, but it’s obviously newer, ad and pics show Indonesia which are usually good quality, on the local Craigslist for a $180 ask with a decent looking bag, strap, and cable included. I don’t need it at all but it’s tempting…new ones now go for over $300 after adding tax. It’s cherry and looks good in the pics…I really need to stop looking at ads. And listening to you guys.

I have read from many people that the 2 band is preferred.

Do you remember being a kid? 😊

BTW one of the surfers has had his leg amputated in RNS (Royal North Shore) Hospital.
I think it was probably the other surfer that the ambulance’s had to perform a “F1 Pitstop” on the Harbour Bridge - his ambulance flying south met up with another waiting for them. The waiting crew had extra blood that they ran across and passed in to the ambulance as the guy was losing so much blood. Maybe it was the guy that they had to amputate the leg from…. 😔

On the kid, I think he is 11 (and volunteers with the lifesaver movement) - in the radio news this morning it said the Hospital has advised us to reduce our recovery expectations for him. Critical but stable, but he went a little long without his brain getting blood. Which is terrible. 😔

The other two only had minor injuries as well as bitten surf boards thankfully.

I was a terrible surfer. I hit my head numerous times, that explains a lot. Our local place was Jalama Beach. Famous for deadly riptides, 40 MPH winds, and the occasional shark. Fortunately no attacks there. There have been a few north at Surf Beach closer to town, but even we weren’t stupid enough to surf there.

Yeah, not too many 50s EB choices. 8^/

Since I couldn't get a birth year bird, I settled for the one from when I was in fourth grade, of which I have many fond memories.
