Recording day. Finally figured out my audio interface has a bad head phone circuit but I was able to use the 1/4" out into a speaker. Also, Waveform 12 refused to allow the backing track to go all the way to the end. So, off to MixPad. The following was using the 64 II through an Ampeg SGT-DI simulating a B-15 with 115 cab. I added a touch of chorus. As always, super simple bass line.

That's tricky in my opinion. Lot's of things can influence the quality, mic, position of mic, environmental noise, latency if using a backing track...

My cab choices are Sunn 215M with EVs, Sunn 215 with Transducers, Fender 115, and Ampeg (CTS) 115. The Sunns are 200W 4 ohm, the Fender is likely 150-200W 8 ohm, and the Ampeg is <100W at 8 ohm. Which should be my first test?

Good question. I don’t recall the exact power rating of the Mesa Walkabout but I think it’s higher than the cab ratings you listed. Double check before cranking it up.

300W at 4 ohms and 165 at 8. So, the only one that might be able to take it cranked, is the Fender 115 at 8 ohms.

I wouldn’t try pushing that Fender cab as it is rated at 8 ohms.
Because they kinda match power wise, doesn’t mean you can crank it, not for a gig at consistent 8ohm power from that Mesa.
Just sayin.

I don't think the neighbors would appreciate cranking it either. I'm pretty cautious with my electronics...but there's always Chucky if something goes wrong.

Your red and gold ‘66 is drool worthy in the looks department and from what you’ve said about the sound with the new strings it’s equally bombastic there as well. Undoing all that just to drop a set of period correct pickups in it will probably cost close to $1000 and only increase the resale value marginally while removing all the visual magic of that super unique and beautifully built bass.

Having just dropped about $800 in ‘76 bicentennial pickups and a ‘76 wiring harness in my BaCH to the Future White NR to replace the China Buckers and associated controls, I’d say the improvement in sound was noticable to me but not so drastic that anyone else could ever pick out the difference in a mix. So at the end of the day I have a feel good bass that on the surface is visually unchanged and sonically, to a casual listener hearing it in a mix, is about the same as it was before the upgrades.

In your case, I suspect you’ll find about the same neutral sonic impact I did, diminished visual impact and a larger cash outlay than I had to get there - not a great combination.

Enjoy that screaming red beauty, she’s a keeper just as is! And for heavens sake, please post some sound clips!

I completely forgot that bass was repainted. That would mean I'd need a heck of a deal on the original pickups. It's not like you can sell the bass as even close to "all original".

Resistance (R) can be a DC or AC term. With AC, it's correct regardless of frequency. Reality is a bit more complex[1], especially at radio frequencies and higher, but for audio frequencies is effectively true.

Impedance (represented by Z because why not?) is similar to resistance but applies only to AC. It includes resistance but also has a capacitive and or inductive (coil) component and varies with frequency.

Both R and Z may be found by the equation R = E / I where E is voltage and I is amperage. Via algebra, that also means E = I * R and I = E / R. You have to measure or otherwise know two of the three to get the third.

Not to mention value vs what someone will pay are two very different things.

Yah, from what I've discovered, on-line players solo's can be AI manipulated to make it appear they are way better than they actually are and apparently it's rampant. I'll take live over 'on-line' any day.

Definitely. But adding something of true value would almost certainly add that to any potential value, and certainly more than I have in the bass. But it's not a good idea. Not unless ones goes full restoration mode.
