Thank you for the post, you'll get a lot of answers on the pickups - I'd strongly suggest Gibson Re-Issues, they're only $130.00 apiece and have a great vintage sound, for the $$$ involved they're hard to beat.

They are great pickups! But whatever you get, they won't fit the current pickup pockets. The pickups on the bolt-on birds are wider and shorter than other bird pickups.

As V said, the Gibson reissues hit well above their price. Yeah, I see they’re backordered at Sweetwater and out of stock at Gibson. I like them a lot. As do others here.

As Dave suggested, the SDs are great too. The pride of Santa Barbara. But spendy. There are others like Gemini as Rich mentioned and many others.

For years Thunderbuckers were the gotos, but the maker closed shop around the time of the pandemic. It’s rare to find a used set.

You could also consider the Epi 760 Probuckers. Used sets pop up from time to time. I think they’re a bit light in the bottom, but others like them a lot.

If price isn’t a concern, consider Lollars. They’re highly regarded but even more expensive than SDs. They’re available in chrome, nickel, gold and black chrome. Here’s an old video of Jason installing them in a basic bolt-on Epi:


Re the Hipshot Supertone, I tried installing one on a bolt-on, but couldn’t get it to intonate properly even after Hipshot provided me different length screws and springs. I also had an issue with getting the string height low enough for my preference. I recently put that bridge on a ‘15 Epi Classic Pro and am having better luck with it on that bass. IMO, the Babicz is a better bridge if you don’t want the stack three point.

I haven't had any problems intonating a Supertone so haven't seen the need to spend more for Babicz, but I know a lot of people love them, and that no one size fits all.
I dunno if a Babicz would work with an Epi 64 bird. The Supertone would have needed a shim, I think, because of the stupid neck angle.

I was just about to comment on the low quality of the vid and saw its was from 14yrs ago ~ My only reference to those pu's is V's white T-bird which if I recall correctly has them. (or were they Lulls?) When we had our 1st T-bird GTG a couple years ago - we all played it and the general consensus was that it sounded awesome. When you think about it - the sound of your bass first comes from the pu's. There are many pu options out there and most sound ok, some sound good/better, and others sound flat-out great. So it's no surprise that the best sounding pu's cost the most.

But I agree with Marshall about the VP pu's. I bought this 2017 IV to gild and re-sell but after playing it when I got it I considered keeping it because it sounded so good. To my ears it was close enough to my '64 II to be considered a legit RI sonically.

It is working well on the CP you polished. It’s not bad at all once dialed in. But I like the Babicz better. Primarily for string height adjustability. With the Hipshot on the bolt-on I also tried shimming the neck at different angles and just couldn’t get the action I like. It may well have just been that particular neck. The three point works fine on it. Although I have it set pretty much on the deck.

To their credit, Hipshot sent me different length screws and springs. It’s a good company.

My '89 has Lulls, you could buy them at that time, I don't know how close Jason's are to the original, but I've always heard great comments about them.

WHat's the string height adjustability advantage? I've had no issues with that on teh Supertine.

Hi all,

New to the Thunderbird life, but not new to bass. Have an army of Fenders, but was gifted this 2006 made in Korean Epiphone that I want to give a different vibe to. I have Hipshot ultralights on the way for tuning machines and the Hipshot SuperTone bridge coming as well, both in nickel. I would like to give it that 1964 T-Bird aka John Entwistle type sound but am having a hard time picking what could be deemed as period accurate replica pickups. I’m trying to keep my budget on pickups around $400-$600. I’ve looked at Lollar and Novak but I don’t really know how to pick pickups for this baby to meet my tone goals. Any suggestions?

I like it ok, but to me it looks over-designed. The Supertone is also big and both can be had for around the same price-point so it's just a matter of what one likes I guess..
