This is where my motto comes in handy. If you can't play good, you can at least sound good. So I have nice stuff.
I think we all play as well as we need* to. At least that's how I feel about my playing. Everyone would like to play better - regardless of level.

*to make ourself happy, to entertain our family/friends, to complete an ensemble, to not embarrass ourselves playing live, and points beyond -

So true.
I've received complements. Never been asked to not come back or been fired. Have been asked to play on some projects and even a few studio demos in the past. But I hear other's play and see so much I lack. But that's really true of all of us most likely. But as you mentioned, I fill a role, people are glad about it and I have fun. Don't get paid anything these days, but as long as I have fun and enjoy it and can live with no pay.

The cartoon version of Buddy Rich!

Telly Savalas talking about Robert Mitchum's character in Cape Fear 1962 - "He's an animal!"

That's what it all comes down to baby - otherwise there's no point in doing it. :)

I love playing live, but what I really love is recording. Recording is honing in on what you want to sound like, what you want to project sonically as a record/document. Recording is a discipline I've naturally gravitated to and if I would have started earlier I probably would have been a studio recording artist/bass player.

The bottles reminded me of a story from way back. A friend lived at UofL. We were professional drinkers at the time and kept the regular fridge full of beer. He had a room mate and we began to notice our beer would at times be reduced in numbers due to no fault of our own. Talking to him was useless so we came up with a plan. One bottle placed in certain handy first spot would be finished and replenished with "recycled" beer you could say. I think we both "donated" for than blended approach. The cap was carefully placed back on and bottle in that certain spot. It sat for a number of days to the point we never thought too much about it other than avoid it.
A bunch of guys were over playing cards one night and a dude I didn't know helped himself to our beer and grabbed the "double pasteurized" bottle. Cracked it open and began chugging. He had a weird look and was saying something as he was trying to remove said liquid from his mouth--what hadn't already gone down. Couldn't make out exactly what he was saying, but sounded like "KISS" or something. We understood he wasn't saying "KISS" after all. A friend of mine was in town from the Marines and chuckled once he figured out what happened. The dude wasn't happy and thought Brian did it and got a little wordy to him while standing over Brian who was seated. Brian told him he just got in town and even he had had to admit it was funny--and he better take a seat before his night got worse. He got some water (unused), and left as I recall.

Not at all suggesting you do that. But seeing bottles of beer all lined up like that often reminds me of that episode from days gone by. Disgusting I know. I'm not proud of a lot of things I did back then, but it was fitting for the roommate who kept stealing our beer. The sad part the intended target didn't get the treat, but the new and unknown dude who helped himself to our beer getting it wasn't a total loss. We were serious about messing with our beer.
Drinking a liquid intended for someone else is a standard movie plot... :)

Ok. That’s just wrong. We did some pretty crappy things to people back in the day. We may have switched good beer with Oly, Burgie, or Ballantine to teach someone a lesson. But we would never have done that. Pretty funny though…

Waterworld?...

All filled. Next, after masking, neck gets a light spray of vinyl sealer, light sand, then light sprays of Antique Gold, hopefully thin enough to still show some grain for the 'bullion' texture. Not that maple has much.
Then a coat or two of clear, the black burst near the join and fill the numbers up smooth with clear, then layers of clear til happy. Then rub, rub, rub.

And then on to final-prepping the body for finish.

Think I've decided the bridge post inserts will go under the finish. I wish I'd drilled the topset just a tiny bit deeper but trying to fix now would be real risky of screwing up the sharp clean holes. Nothing for the bit to guide on.

Note to self: dont forget to install the ground wire this time.

I only wish I could play as well as I used to back when we were working 6 nights/week. And nearly as often.

Well... I wish I could ride two back-to-back Sat/Sun 100mile bicycle rides like I used to do regularly... but that was then -

I figure I’m ok at best. I just dive into it, anyway. If someone lets me play, I play!
That's the spirit! :bassist: An early realization for me as a bass player happened in undergrad art school - a group of us who played provided live music for a house party. Late into the night, one by one the player participants left until it was only me on bass while the party was still engaged & rockin'. I just kept playing which kept everyone dancing. I felt empowered as a musician - I could keep everyone dancing just playing bass! I never forget that we are entertainers and have the power to entertain.

This guy-the best-so tasteful:

I had the pleasure of meeting him (and bassist Eugene Wright) in 1963.
Yah, I agree - JM is one tasteful drummer... the most tasteful drummers are Jazzers. I saw/heard Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Al Foster, and others I'm blanking on...

It was. But that clown was an ongoing problem in a number of ways and deserved it. If you knew the guy you would have approved--maybe contributed!
The guy who got it didn't.
Maybe said it tasted like Miller.... Which confirmed our suspicions about Miller anything.
