Thunderbird Club

Man, I never read MF as anything other than a swear. Then again, i'm extremely exhausted so excuse my brain atm 😁 šŸ˜‚

On bird talk, how many of y'all prefer the vintage Alnico 60's sound over the Modern post 88 ceramics? I feel both have their place when needed, however the post 88 doesn't do the clear angry piano like the 60's does, but does the 60's do that very thick/compressed in a way post 88?
Yes they are different animals. With some La Bella black nylons it sounds really good. But not a Thunderbird in terms of vintage sounding tone. I've had my 1964 since 81/82 and when I got the '06 it gave me fits in getting it to sound good. Plays like a dream. But after hearing the gold standard for decades it was a culture shock. Not to say they don't sound good, they just don't sound anything like a vintage Thunderbirds. Epi was the one that fixed that in the Gibson family with the VP, 60s 64, whatever they are calling them this month. Or got close without dropping serious money. Early VPs can be shy in the lows but the rig really matters. I likely go for more lows than anyone here and don't have a problem. But they are not as big sounding as the vintage basses. Current version seems to have gotten more lows but at the expense of upper mids. So it all depends on what is preferred.

bought them (250 for the pair) years ago, then reverted back to the TB+ ....Jeff has the bridge one, the neck one is in my white BaCH II...
If it weren’t for you and Ken.
I wouldn’t have the Sidewinder and a pair of ThunderBuckers.
It’s what really makes this bass come alive.
If only I could put a 2 piece bridge on……

Well you can...I converted my Orville to a 2 piece bridge and filled the holes with mahogany dowels. I'm planning to refinish the bass at some point, and yeah I know the dowels will telegraph through over time.

I kinda doubt you go for as much lows as I used to.

I usually read it as Mother's Finest — one of the best bands to come out of Atlanta that should have been huge. If that’s not what I see, then yeah, mama freaker.

The 60s bird does nearly everything I want but … for just low end (early Motown, ABB, Skynyrd? The modern pickups rule. A bit of irony there.

It has the next best thing. Maybe best!

I've found that the 67NR fits anything I (wanna) do with minor tweaks of the tone knob. I only use(d) the 'neck' pickup-which isn't really all that close to the neck, truth be told-with the tone knob normally at 7; 5 for mellower tunes, 10 for driving R&R. Because we don't/didn't use set lists, theres no time to make adjustments to the R100 and, of course, I don't use pedals.

Both look absolutely stunning, & valid points in tone. You can't expect that vintage tone from the newer TBird +, but you could potentially get close to the new thunder sound with the 60's pickups (vintage or Repro). I've got the RI gibson pups in my Epi ungothed bird, & i love their open clarity vs the epi deep sixx pups i had in it for a long time. I am waiting on a pair of modern Gib + (curtesy of @Ringhammer), which i'll be trying out in my bird. & while i am 100% building a new 2-3 piece hard maple slab body to replace the original dry/brittle mahogany epi, i'm wondering which of the two sets will be installed in the new body/revamped Bird of mine.

I noticed that your birds pickup spacing is also different; 60's being closer to one another, modern being more spaced out. Any difference in "balance", a little more "bite" on the modern (not that the vintage wouldn't already have the bite needed).

Is it cause your 60's bird doesn't do the low end quite as "big" as the modern pickups, even with perhaps the tone rolled off?

Ha! And that was the bridge I sent you.
I was going to have it done, but Rudy’s tech wanted way to much money to do the conversion.

Thanks. The '06 plays as well as the '64. Wonderful bass. Some internet complaints abotu QC back then, but mine it fantastic.

Yes, the spacing is the other half of why the modern Thunderbirds (newer NR included) don't sound big--but tight as the the ones from the 60s. Gibson was chasing something when they moved the pups. Possibly looks, who knows. The closer the neck pup gets to the neck the deeper and less tight they sound. Kind of like playing over a pup or at the end of the neck. Different tone and one that is not for me. Epi put the pups very close to the original ("correct" to me), location and is in large part why they sound very close to the originals. Gibson doesn't relocate Les Paul pups do they? And for good reason.

I'm not one that thinks all ceramic pups sound cold and sterile. Old G&Ls sound warm and I've heard Alnico pups sound "not warm." As a result I would like to hear the TB+ in the original locations. I think they would sound really good. Not vintage, but really good. But there seems to be several versions of the TB+ pup. V knows the most about that, but I recall the versions and time frams are still unclear.

Yeah. I have to do more tone shaping on the amp or eq pedal to get the 64 close to that sound.

Good to know! I thought of varying the pickup spacing when i built a new body for my bird, but may opt against it. I have basses/guitars with alnico or ceramic magnet equipped pickups, & while that's only a small portion of contribution to their sound, i dig the basses with ceramic magnet pickups as much as those with Alnico 5. Different flavours all around, wood densities, board material/finishing,

I'm curious once i have my tb+ set arrive, how they'll differ in sound vs the 60 RI gibsons i currently have in it.

I’d have to double check, but I think the Eppi CP TB+ pups are very close to the vintage bird locations, at least in one of the CP iterations. I’ll confirm in a bit.
