Thunderbird Club

I usually read it as Mother's Finest — one of the best bands to come out of Atlanta that should have been huge. If that’s not what I see, then yeah, mama freaker.

The 60s bird does nearly everything I want but … for just low end (early Motown, ABB, Skynyrd? The modern pickups rule. A bit of irony there.
Same here - for the way I want to hear my basses, adding the Seymour Duncan Hawkbucker B-pu in the late '80s (before doing such was considered sacrilegious) on my '64 II gave it more definition which made the bass sound perfect to me. (still does) Back then it was the only bass I owned and I wanted it to suit my wants/needs regardless of resale "vintage worth" which was not talked about then. If I bought it in today's world I certainly wouldn't alter it but I've never regretted doing so because it follows me to the end of the coil.

Thanks. The '06 plays as well as the '64. Wonderful bass. Some internet complaints abotu QC back then, but mine it fantastic.

Yes, the spacing is the other half of why the modern Thunderbirds (newer NR included) don't sound big--but tight as the the ones from the 60s. Gibson was chasing something when they moved the pups. Possibly looks, who knows. The closer the neck pup gets to the neck the deeper and less tight they sound. Kind of like playing over a pup or at the end of the neck. Different tone and one that is not for me. Epi put the pups very close to the original ("correct" to me), location and is in large part why they sound very close to the originals. Gibson doesn't relocate Les Paul pups do they? And for good reason.

I'm not one that thinks all ceramic pups sound cold and sterile. Old G&Ls sound warm and I've heard Alnico pups sound "not warm." As a result I would like to hear the TB+ in the original locations. I think they would sound really good. Not vintage, but really good. But there seems to be several versions of the TB+ pup. V knows the most about that, but I recall the versions and time frams are still unclear.
The early version was nearly the same. Then they spread them out.

Here’s some interesting comparative finds on Thunderbird pickup spacing through the ages as traced out from my basses…
IMG_6462.jpeg

Neck pickups:
Basically with the template held at the 20th fret you can see that the Gibby 1967 NR II pickup is in the exact same location as the 2012 Epiphone CP and the Epiphone VP as well as the newer Epiphone 64 Reissue neck pickup.
The 1979 Gibson Bicentennial bird moved the neck pickup closer to the neck by about a third of a pickup width.
The Gibson 2013 Anniversary, the 2021 Gibson NR Reissue and the 2015 bird were all bumped even closer to the neck, as was the 1991 three pickup Thunderbird.
Conclusions - if you want to hear what a vintage bird would sound like with TB+ pickups, get a 2012 CP (to my ears the CP sounds warmer). It looks like Gibson repositioned the neck pickup closer to the neck when they reintroduced the Thunderbird for the Bicentennial launch and kept moving it further from the original position even more towards the neck as time went on.

Bridge pickups:
The 2012 CP, the 2019 VP and the new Eppi 64 reissue all share the exact same bridge pickup location. Unfortunately I don’t have a vintage IV reverse or NR to get a bridge pup location from, but I suspect it’s about the same for the vintage birds as well, someone with both a VP and a vintage Reverse or NR would need to confirm that.
Interestingly enough, all the birds I have from 1979 on (and I suspect the 76 as well) share the exact same bridge location, which is about 1/3 of a pickup width closer to the neck.
Conclusions - since the Thunderbird relaunch in the mid 1970’s it looks like the bridge pickup location has held steady, which is about one third of a pickup width further from the bridge.

That's a good way to show the changes!

The circle of irony is; if everybody had worried about 'later resale value' back then, there would be so many of them now that they wouldn't have the value they do.

Looks like well cared for and carefully maintaied, holding up well as value accrues with years and mojo.

The bass, too... 😎

Also, my knees hurt just looking at that first pic.🙈

Hello fellow 'bird players...been long time. Finally making my '08 my #1 player, 'cos the VP is gone. Stage 1, I performed 2 weeks ago. Dunlop flush mount staplocks. Stage 2, took to my guy for installation of eyguitar "chinabuckers", Babicz bridge, and setup. Stage 3, is I'm waiting for Hipshot mini clovers & double stop xtender, and I've got a set of Labella balanced tension flats for it. Pics of Stage 1 & 2. I know you'll see it in the picture...the black front bolt...I had a discussion with my guy because he called me and said "hey Rob! You gotta get a new bolt from Babicz. This one's the wrong size!" He's 9 yrs older than me and has no want of "The YouTube" or bass forums and we all know the issues with Babicz and Hipshot bridges...lol. I told him to just put the black Gibson bolt back in it. I'll deal with it at some point.
Probably at Stage 3.
Liking the EY's..REALLY angry piano. Very bright and I'm sure,at least to my ear, hotter than the VP's are...but to get my sound on the VP, I tamed it a bit by putting EBCF's on it..that's why I'm putting flats on the Gibson. Thanks for indulging me. Hope you all are having a great weekend.

I used to sit like that all the time - can't really do it anymore due to cramping after having both hips replaced a few years ago. Circulation isn't the same as it used to be. :) I can ride my road-bike for hours w/o issues luckily so as long as I can do that I can deal with some inevitable age-related limitations.

Nice! I have a set of Chinabuckers from eBay - not sure if they are the same as EYs, but they sound good.
