Thunderbird Club

I have to be honest & say that I've always chuckled at Explorers and the likes, because coming up through the '80s, they were just so "metal". I'm old enough now to realize that, hey... if they have the sound & feel... who gives a crap? As I've said before... if you found the right neck, you could jam it into a rotting corpse, run a cord to it & I'd play it!
Explorer basses have roots to 1958 when Gbison first made them. Enter the 70's and Entwistles Explorerbirds and Alembics. My 76 Ibanez Destroyer was the closest I could get a the time. I don't really equate the Explorer shape with 80's metal.

Slight change of subject here. Considering the several mentions of the band Tool in recent days (last 80 - 90 or so pages...) I just had to post this. So if anyone is offended by shameless name dropping and self aggrandizement please just ignore this and move on.

I've posted here before that Tool drummer and founder Danny Carey is from my wife and mine's home town and that he's a personal friend, although contacts are infrequent as he's been based in LA for quite some time now. My wife went to school with him and they played in the high school band together and I (briefly) played with him in a small garage band while he was still a senior in high school (I'm a few years older). He makes it home from time to time to see family and friends and has a habit of just showing up unannounced at various get togethers when he's around.

Played a 60th birthday party last evening at the local VFW hall from 8 - 11:30 and had literally quit playing and just started breaking down when he pops in the door. Dude was bummed that we'd already quit, he'd heard we were playing and was hoping to sit in a bit which over the years he's done a few times with other local bands I've been in (we were bummed too but too late to go back). Anyway got to sit and catch up, had a few drinks with him, the wife, and various friends, I think it was about 2:30 am when the bartender finally asked he she could close up and go home.

Danny if you didn't know him or know who he is is probably one of the last people you'd ever meet you'd think could possibly be a "rock star". Humble, unassuming, friendly, hasn't forgotten where he came from. Always happy to meet people and catch up with the homies.

And of course no photos or it didn't happen, right. So here you go.

First photo - Danny in the blue shirt, me next to him in the black Stones shirt, my wife next to me, my former keyboard player (and still good friend) next to her. For reference I'm 6' 1" and Dan is easily 3 - 4" taller than I am. Second photo is the wife and a couple of her BFF's with Danny. A good time was had by all!

I love the SVT sound but as a backup it seems like overkill. The Peavey VB2 is supposed to be a great head, weighs less, and costs way less. 225 watts is plenty for a tube head in most situations. Some people use a 100 watt Ampeg V4B and have no issues keeping up and being heard.

I would second the earlier suggestion of getting a solid, lightweight head. Genz makes great small but powerful heads. If you want the SVT sound check out the Tech21 VT head. Great sound for low$$$.

Loved TPOH but if I was to throw out a couple of Canadian bands I would say April Wine and Last Crack.

I was never a fan of the HA heads. Too bright for me. The newer LH heads have a warmer sound and seem to be pretty popular and have nice price tags. The new Hydrive cabs are pretty nice as well.

Such a beauty!! I will trade you my Bach Bird for it ;) Love my Hamers!!

Might go with this one

Ashdown Rootmaster RM500 500W Bass Head

Do they actually follow the rider?
It's a new deal we signed with a pretty powerful management company, they handle national acts, tributes and comidians. The first shows are 3-4 months out. I will let you know. We will be playing festivals, casinos, etc.

DAYUM!!! If they all looked like that, I wouldn't either! I've never seen one like that before! What's that little round thing I see between the bridge and the pick guard?

I have a lot of those kindsa songs in my collection too. I think it's important to hold on to those. They were among the first seeds to be planted, that made you who you are today!
Absolutely, we all have a few of em. They instantly transport you to a reference point in your life and paint the memory with a full and clear pallet of colors. Amazing how music can do that.

Lol most people I tell them it is the input jack then I plug my cord in lol. In truth the bass came with a three point bridge. I installed the Badass almost immediately and it has been there since 76.

I can only equate the Explorer shape with 80's metal as in that time I was a teenager and Metal was and is still a major influence in my life. I lump the V's and the Tbirds into that time period as well, I think any Metal head from that period feels the same way. Ironically I stayed away from any of these models strictly because they had that Metal stigma attached to them and I always naturally seemed to buck the trends. But!, it is only since I became a part of the Bird life and the Gibson/Epiphone family that I have learned the history and understood the design philosophies that I can now look further past my initial feelings on what these instruments are. I see them with more of an open mind now with the knowledge Ive gained from all of the well educated Thunderbird Club members here.cheers-emoji.png

Hey man... how easy is it to replace the 3 point, with your bridge?

Oh... I found this for ya...

Fane era Hiwatt, way way way over priced. The Badbird II drops right in, you only have to install the tailpiece 1/2" behind the btidge.

To this day... if I hear the song "Sad Eyes" from Robert John, it sucks me back in time to when I was a 10 year old kid pushing myself around the wall at Skateland in Battle Creek, MI. The sights, sounds, smells... so many very specific details... it's just crazy. When it happens, I'm sure everyone around me thinks I'm having a seizure or something!

See!, and I'll bet this album dont run regular rotation through your collection either. But it has significance. People who know me personally would never expect me to play Jefferson Starship - Miracles or Gerry Rafferty's - Baker Street but guess what? I love those tunes and they are entrenched deeply within me from early childhood. Favorites of all time.
