Plus there's his awful technique when he plays finger style.

Being pretty much exclusively a pick guy, myself, I can't really see what's so offensive about his right hand technique. I thought with electric bass playing, there are no hard and fast rules regarding technique. Especially, when you consider that Leo Fender originally put the wooden rest below the strings thinking that that bassists would play the Precision with their thumb.
Plus, if you'd never heard of James Jamerson and saw a video of him plucking with one finger, that could definitely be construed as questionable technique!

I use a Shure digital wireless into an fDeck HPF and then into a ToneHammer. It tames piezo honk with the little Carvin amp and gives me the ability to adjust the eq to the room easier with the little amp and the big ol' Acoustics. It isn't perfect, but it works well enough for what I do.

I tried the Fishman Platinum thing and my VT pedal and something else that I don't recall right now to tame the honk and soften the finger noise before I gave up. I think it's more about his "distorted" positioning. Usually you should keep your arm as straight as possible playing finger style.

Yes, it is, and it works alone pretty well. With the ToneHammer and the eq on the amp itself, you can solve a lot of problems. I find that it's generally low frequencies that feed back worst, which makes the HPF pretty important. The other way I deal with it is standing between the bass and the amp. Let the sound have a straight shot from amp to bass and you get awful noises. That's where the wireless comes in nicely. You can just turn it off. It's one of the best tuners I have used, too. It gets less confused by the general chaos and noodling that sometimes goes on when I'm trying to tune. With gut strings, that's more often than with a 'Bird. Compression is a really bad idea with the upright. When it starts to feed back, the compressor keeps the feedback going. The last thing I ever want out of the upright is compression. Or grind or distortion or anything else, for that matter. If I want to use effects, I'll skip the complications of the upright. That's pretty rare these days. I even play the 'Birds completely clean, although I have come to like just a tad of compression with them.

I was surprised at how reasonable the HPF's price was when I bought mine. I doubt it's gone up much, if at all. And, standing in between the instrument and amp puts this sack of goo I call a body to good use for a change.

Though I agree that his right hand looks awkward and unnatural... it's an inappropriate stretch to call it "wrong" or "horrible" or what have you. You have to consider that he may have a medical condition, or the possibility that he could be self-taught and had no resources available to teach him otherwise. We could speculate all day long, but it would be a complete waste of time. Whatever his story is... he's sitting in a professional studio, surrounded by vintage basses that he's been asked to play. Whatever he's doing' seems to be working for him! Once again... each of us have the power to click on it & make it stop. It's one thing to criticize the tone of each bass (that's why the video was made). To criticize the player's techinique is something else entirely. I'm sure there have been other videos made for that.

Got to dig into Gov't Mule now. His AB work is great.

He was holding back with the Allman Brothers, because he needed to fit in with them. Gov't. Mule let him off the leash! The best Allen Woody playing I've heard, is on a bootleg (or "unofficial release"). It's called "Live at Humpty's, Tahoe City, CA 8/18/1996". Another great one is called "The Tel-Star Sessions", with is a collection of studio out-takes from earlier sessions. If you can't get you hands on either of those, I'll recommend going for their first album, simply titled, "Gov't Mule". Woody's best stuff is the live stuff though!

I hate the US used market.

Keep in mind that it's an auction. The odds are, that it will probably sell somewhere around fair market value. This kind of auction is fun to watch though. At the end, there could be a bidding war that results in this Thunderbird selling for $1,000.00 over market value... or (and this is what I love)... it could mystically slide under the radar and sell for like $400.00! The odds are severely against that... but I have had it happen, both as a buyer and a seller. That's why it's fun to watch! Ya just don't know what's gonna happen

Keep in mind that it's an auction. The odds are, that it will probably sell somewhere around fair market value. This kind of auction is fun to watch though. At the end, there could be a bidding war that results in this Thunderbird selling for $1,000.00 over market value... or (and this is what I love)... it could mystically slide under the radar and sell for like $400.00! The odds are severely against that... but I have had it happen, both as a buyer and a seller. That's why it's fun to watch! Ya just don't know what's gonna happen
