Thunderbird Club

Alumitones are the antithesis of ThunderBuckers. I bought one of the first ones on the market around 2009 when I was building this "Ergo Ultra" six pounder. Very clean, modern tone. Not a bad thing, just not Birdlike IMO.

The monkey part of my brain is saying 'if you have 3, you should put something qualitatively different in the pro iv'.

The reptile part of my brain is saying 'clean? modern? who are you trying to kid? get the thunderbucker, idiot, and let the probucker 760 chips fall where they may!'

The reptile is winning ... with a little push from Carlo.

What a crappy night. Spent 3 hours trying to get the 3 month old to sleep, then discovered a lovely big leak coming through the kitchen light fitting. On top of that, still no info on the Epiphone website!! This calls for beer.

Been there, done that. I feel for you. FWIW, my daughter woke up every two hours until she was 1. You need one of these:

Tonight I complete the trifecta of Metallica bassists.

'86 - Cliff Burton, Master of Puppets Tour

'92 - Jason Newsted, Monsters of Rock Tour coheadlining with GnR.

Tonight - Robert Trujillo, Hardwired World Tour!

Metallica, for whatever you think of their music or Ulrich/Hetfield, have had great bass players. Or at least 3/4 of them as I have no opinion on Ron McGovney never having heard him play.

You lot are SO fickle! Yesterday it was all the Vintage Pro and now you're all drooling over supposed new Gibsons! Ooh SHINY! Well, I'm still holding out for an Epiphone, so there!

Actually, a new Gibson would be seriously outside my price range, the Epi is far more realistic. Just need to know how good those pickups really are - and that's what has me a little on edge atm.

I am with you Kat. I hope the pickups in the Epi will be fine. If not to your liking, change them out. Not a huge deal at the likely price point.
Only two of the mooted 2018 Gibsons could possibly interest me- the TBirds and the RDs. The EB doesn't appeal if they are talking the current 2015 shape and spec. The SG- not a fan of short scales.
My worry with the 2018 TBirds and the RDs could also be the pickups, but at their likely price point for me it is a bigger deal to mod the bass. They will likely be pretty pricey here, if we even see them in Australia.
I am less than enraptured with TB+s in TBirds (just my personal preference). For me the attraction with RDs is that they were different sounding as well as different looking. Both the original Standard and the Artist had great voices all their own. It will be interesting to see what pickups and electronics they put in what they are calling an RD Artist 2018. The use of a pair of Jazz Bass single coils in the previous "Novoselic Tribute RD Standard" was a major let down for me. I also wasn't fussed on the finish of the couple of examples that I handled out here.

Being a lighting person the piqued my interest, what is leaking through your kitchen light fixture Mr HairyPete?

Water from the bathroom above. I think it's a blocked waste pipe from the bath. It's nearly stopped now, so the lights willl be staying off until I can get a plumber out tomorrow. Grrr

That does not sound good - In at least two ways, I wish you good luck Sir!

Does anyone have any recommendations for something unobtrusive and black colour to cover a pickup cavity? Preferably easy to cut without cutting me. I'm not looking for anything steam-punkish a la @Count Bassie's recent adventures. Thinking more along the lines of tracing around the mounting ring, cutting and then screwing it into place.

Leave the pickup in there just not hooked up.

As @Gaolee has hinted, they probably work well with pedals.

This:
Black Adhesive Pickguard Blank | Allparts.com

or this:

Plastic Styrene Black Sheet .030x6x12 (2) Model Railroad Scratch Building Supply #9514 by Evergreen (9514)
more matte than the pickguard stuff.

both will cut with scissors.
