Honest question: Why is action such a big deal when considering buying a bass or not? It's adjustable.

I don't dare thinking how many it would be with all the Gibson iterations...

You mean if the lowest it could possibly be adjusted to isn't low enough, you don't want it?

I usually just adjust stuff low enough that it buzzes on the lower frets but not when played through the amp.

Me too, but I just figured it's always something you can tweak on your own. Get intimate with your truss rod and all.

I'm sure they would do it to make a sale.
But here's the thing Fix, it's not the wait, i can hack that, i just have this strong gut feeling to hold out for the vintage pro.
I like my Jazz, it's just not the right tone for me.
Besieds, i need to buy an AC after work, this heat and humidity is killin me lousy.

edit; by the way, the neck on said Epi is straight, action just way to high.

Just to clarify... I'm not trying to push you into anything... I'm just offering different ideas & perspectives to help make it possible should you choose to pursue it. You gotta do what's best for you. The end game is the same, whether it happens now or later. I'm just the kinda guy that likes to get to the goal line as fast as possible once a decision has been reached. I'll take as long as I need to reach that decision, but once it's been made... I'd sooner take a sawzall to my man parts, than sit around & wait to implement the plan I've just formulated. If your heart is telling you "Vintage Pro"... then waiting might be the right thing for you to do. If your heart is saying "Thunderbird"... it sounds like you could make that happen today. The N+1 formula dictates that there will be more than one in your life anyway, so what difference does it make which one comes first?

I'm just not as strong a player as i used to be, i've always been accustomed to low action when i first started playing.

It more depends if someone jacked up the action as a work around for a neck issue, ski jump, high frets, etc.
It's true though that the truss rod is a bigger issue. If it's not working, as Dave says, "yer gooched".

That's how it start's for some, a backup, then next thing you know you wakeup with 30+ TBirds in your house and no sign of anything else...

Bad action can hide far more serious issues, like warped necks & bad frets. Also, for me, the feel of the neck, is the single most important consideration when looking at a bass. I would eagerly snatch up a bad deal on beat up, crappy old Epiphone Thunderbird with a great feeling neck, than a great deal on a mint condition Gibson Thunderbird with a wafer thin neck. When the bass I'm looking at, has half inch high action... I can't enjoy playing it enough to even get a feel for the neck. Same thing applies to crappy, corroded, grimy old dead strings. It interferes with playability and enjoyabilty... plus... you can't get a good idea of what the pickups will truly sound like.
