Thunderbird Club

The problem with finding a gig bag that fits a 'Bird and everything else is size. A bag big enough for a Thunderbird will let everything else rattle around like a BB in a tin can. If that isn't a concern, then any bag big enough for a 'Bird ought to work. As long as the lower bouts are wide enough. A few bass guitars are wider than a Thunderbird, but none are as long as far as I know.

Actually you can, the switch sits in the middle , two wires should do it
I just sent that to Steve at ThunderBucker Ranch. Hope to get a reply and will post.

Steve:
Regarding ThunderBucker type pickups:

"It should work, at the down side risk that the can of the N pup now floats in the series position. That means more electrostatic hum, potentially quite a lot if you were to touch it with your fingers while in series position.

You could disconnect the can and low coil on that pickup, run a 2 conductor shielded wire from coils to the switch, and independently ground the can and the wire shield with a new ground wire. That should work OK.

Floating the can is the problem. You can do this with a fender pickup because there is no can. (probably still somewhat noisy tho) Ironically, a floating can will pickup more noise than no can. Because, like, physics."

Do this at your own risk. Desoldering the can voids your warranty.

Appreciate the detailed reply, being specifically tailored for a 'bird is great but I am looking for a less specific shape, just something that would be able to accommodate the dimensions of a 'bird as well as other bass body shapes...have you tried other bass body styles in that case, a P a J a Ric...anything but a 'bird?
I've tried a P-Bass in this case, and a Violin Bass in one too. Works really well, as well as few guitars. But because of the awkward shape of the T-Bird being pointy at opposite ends, they had to make a case for it specifically, the other cases for bases seems to be generic for most acoustic and electric basses respectively, but neither would fit the T-Bird.

I did get one of those cases that look like a elongated triangle, that open up flat, but didn't like them. The head of my Thunderbird stuck out of the end, even though it was a bass specific case. A bit rubbish, and the padding wasn't that thick either.

Ok, just got home and grabbed my 35" scale Spector Bird and my 34" scale Gibson TBird. The longer scale Spector fits with room to spare. Unfortunately, the Gibson does not fit.

Blame the goofy headstock (which sticks about an inch out of the bag). I suspect you could force the fit but you'd end up having little to no real padded protection for the headstock and the Nylon zipper would be rubbing hard against the end of the headstock. For me that's a NoGo on the Roadrunner/Gibby combo.
Yeah, gotta agree with you, no-go. Appreciate your help @GBassNorth

Thanks @ThunderFox
I agree, those open-flat triangle style bags are pretty crappy, I had one for my BC Rich Mockingbird, terrible.

I’ve mentioned many times that I use a Gator ProGo, which fits the Thunderbird well, by it also fits the much shorter Carvin snugly. No movement.

Yes, I have the ProGo double, I wanted to see if there was an option out there beside the ProGo single that may be more cost effective. It seems there is not...great opportunity for a new product development if we got the ears of SKB or Gator in this forum ;-)

I work with 'vintage style' TBird pickups . AFAIK you can't 'series' them. There's a hot lead and a ground which is wired directly to the metal can. That presents a major problem in attempting a series connection.

I need to see how this has been done successfully including a wiring diagram and/or interior shot of the control cavity. Until then I'm skeptical.

Clue: think of a pair of flashlight batteries in series. That's a closed circuit without a large hunk of exposed metal carrying current.

@Sartori is the only person I know who claims to have series ThunderBuckers. Maybe he can explain it with hard evidence of the conversion.
Thanks Carlo! I'll leave a lamb at the alter for ya;)

Got any new pix of that greenburst neck-thru 12 string?

There’s also the question of how much your bass is worth to you. But Gator does make lighter-weight bags that might fit.

Not yet, pickups came in today. My latest medical adventure put me farther behind schedule. Probably be finished in a week to 10 days.

First post Irma, post medical madness bass sendoff...seems like it's been years in the making.

...and a current photo of yours truly. Toothache that turned into a zoster virus attack. Major pain from my jaw into temple for three days. Now under control with penicillin, oxycodone, prednisone, and acycolvir. More legal drugs than I've ever taken at one time.

I'm still deaf in my left ear, hopeful it will improve soon.
Damn Carlo... I'm guessing you won't be remembering 2017 in a super positive way:unsure:

I hope this goes away in a hurry.

Beautiful bass by the way! Another gorgeous finish:thumbsup:

2017 has definitely had some unforeseen events but overall it's been positive. I'm well aware how healthy I am compared to other people my age or even 15 years younger. Every time I see a doctor they remind me of that.

Thanks on the bass!

Hey fellow 'bird brains I need some help, I want a decent mid-line gig bag to be able to grab and go that will fit my 2015 'bird as well as the other more standard P and J shapes, a Ric too...I've been down all the typical roads, the 'bird specific no-name bags on eBay and amazon, also I have a Gator ProGo for 2 basses that would fit the bill, but its for 2 basses, I know Gator makes a single but its $150 (before you do the dance) which defeats my mid-line requirement, would prefer to stay around $70 only because it will be a beater bag....anyone have luck with anything else out there worth mentioning? Interested in the Fender FB620 but no one, not even Fender appears to have the interior dimensions for it.

This will work:
