The tube units rarely sound good because the distortion is a result of plate starving. switching out the tubes wont help.
Slow barge from Nashville?
I am familiar with the electric razor effect ... and swapping in a 12AU7 didn’t help a lot. You are probably better off looking for a good SS emulation. I went down the valve OD into class D amp path and it was IME a waste of time and money. Definitely try before you buy.
Back in the day SS ODs were pretty nasty and they have improved markedly, but the line between good and fizzy is pretty narrow ... and they’re just not the same.

As far as shiny boxes, I don't use OD much, but I find that the little bit the ToneHammer can have is enough for the minimal grit I sometimes want. The fuzz circuit built into the 360 is fun to play with, but I hardly use it.
That Tone Hammer is a fine little piece. IMO, very organic sounding as long as you don't go crazy with the gain while the AGS is engaged.
It's a bit like making caramel actually. The margin between golden brown and burnt, bitter and overdone is very fine. You have to get the drive control set in just that spot.
I would really like to hear the Fender Bassman 300.
Aside from that, i'd be looking for an SVT VR.
Actually... you're right. The 12AU7 is the softer tube. I'm gonna hafta find that & re-read what he said...Another thing is that a 12AX7 is a more powerful tube than a 12AU7, if I'm not mistaken. That means you will get more clean headroom with the 12AX7. I'll occasionally put a 12AU7 into a small tube amp to get more drive at a lower volume. I wouldn't put one into anything I wanted to get more clean headroom out of.
Bassman 100T -- then you can drive it a bit -- or Traynor.
Well... you just had it done today... and here you are telling us about it today... so... I guess it coulda been worseSo, I am back from surgery. the good; it's done. the bad it was the worse hand, so the surgery was more difficult and I knew what was coming. we had some good laughs in the OR because it helps me relive the tension.
but the worst is that I have type left handed! I now have sympathy for all the lefties. how do you manage using this hand?![]()
Nice thing about the Mesa Strategy, even the Prodigy, you can run it at "low power" which is roughly 125W so you can drive it quite a bit without demolishing a city block.Bassman 100T -- then you can drive it a bit -- or Traynor.
The Traynor is rarely seen in these parts. Would love to hear one as well.

Darkglass Alpha-Omega (or Omicron).IDK, i believe really good overdrive comes from an all tube amp.
There are some good pedals out these days, haven't found one that i can bond with yet.
Oh I agree 100%... but in Kat's case, a small outboard unit is the right tool for the job.IDK, i believe really good overdrive comes from an all tube amp.
