Yeah, the USA native who came up to me and started asking about my fanny pack got more than he bargained for, on my first holiday in the States. At that time, I didn't know that what over there is known as a "Fanny Pack", and oddly a "Bum Bag" to a Brit..... anyway, I thought he was suggesting I had female genitalia..... LOL
'Bum' strikes me as a very cruel term for people who are so often in the grip of terrible illness, or dire circumstance. I'd better not get started, otherwise the mods will be at me.
In one of my favorite British sitcoms the police chief says "Stop fannying about"!. I love it. I use it in my parts of the world and it sets the listeners mind in motion while giving me the one hundred yard stare. hilarious
.Is 'bum' still used to refer to a homeless person in the US? I 'spose over here the PC brigade would have a fit with that. I bet 'tramp' is frowned upon now. I guess 'homeless person' would be the PC description.

I can't say for sure. I'm in Canada. We... well I usually just say homeless. Tramp has a very different meaning though

I still notice people of a certain age referring to a clumsy woman as 'fannyann'. Which doesn't seem to cause offence. Not sure where that one came from.
