Thunderbird Club

Lots for folks can make a single coil Jazz bass sound awesome, but I ain’t one of em. The balance and ergonomics can be pretty great though. About two years ago, I tried really hard to embrace the J thing. Bought a really nice Fender CS 60’s style, played one gig with it and flipped it. It’s now someone else’s dream bass, which makes me very happy. Just before that, I traded something for a Lakland J with an East JRetro pre. Couldn’t ditch that thing fast enough. Then best one by far was a 60’s style Bluesman Vintage. I had my tech wire in a series/parallel switch. Better still, but at that point I just had to accept I’m not a J bass kinda dude. Nearly decided to put some Lollar ‘Bird pickups in it, but decided it just needed to move along. Can’t say I didn’t try, but they just don’t seem to be for me. Now when I see a cool looking J, I just think of what I’d replace the pickups with
My first bass was a J bass, learned on it, played for years, then got my Grabber (in 98) and never gigged with it again. Last year sold it to fund a new upright. Was hard to sell my first bass but I realized it had more sentimental value than playing value to me.
I can still smell that case if I think about it...

I started on Gibson basses and have kept going back to them my entire life. Not knocking other stuff as I always have a P bass or two laying around, but something about Gibson’s have always been just a bit more ‘interesting’ to me

Ya I don't know exactly what's up with that, but the chances of it actually being Ebony is superbly low. It's a low quality picture though which doesn't help. But most of the really dark ones like that that show nearly no grain, are stock photos, so they could have just oiled it making it look darker.
But I don't blame you for wanting a darker fretboard
My VP fretboard has very little grain and is mostly dark. I don't think it's Ebony, if it's rosewood it's been stained relatively dark. Looks nice as is. I wouldn't personally make a purchase decision on this considering the pups and everything else are so perfect.

Well, the girl has only gotten out of bed to be sick a couple times. That was hours ago and she’s been resting ever since. Got a couple saltines, some water and a ginger ale in her. Best she could manage, poor thing
Chicken noodle soup, Saltine crackers and constant sips of room temperature sprite. She'll be better in no time. Wishing you and your family (and pets) a wonderful, healthy and happy Christmas. It's no fun being sick this time of year.

Personally, I think fretboard material is more of a visual preference. Sound-wise, I think fret material is a bigger factor because that's what the strings actually touch, and even your fingers shouldn't touch the board at all either. So to me it's purely aesthetics, but not a deal breaker, but definitely a deal enhancer :roflmao:

me neither, sorry i have serious problem with explaining myself. i just prefer dark fingerboard, and if there such VPs out there, then i will wait for those to come to Japan and won't buy this one.

Thanks! Same to you :)

All good points with which I agree.
My post was geared to reflect a perfect world where we didn't have to alter animals in the first place. You two are highlighting the real world with its real delimas and real choices that have to be made. I doubt there are any in this club that are any more of an animal lover than me. It just tears me up to hear about rescue dogs or cats that will be put down because they've been in the pound too long. Having lost pets to coyotes, wolves, wild dogs, mountain lions, turtles and cars I am equally torn up by those losses as well. And yes, some of the cats in the pound are there because their owners didn't like their furniture clawed up. There's no simple answer to the problem. Every solution has additional consequences. So take my post for what it is - a pie in the sky wish that we didn't have to declaw, or spay or neuter or debark or dock or otherwise alter or destroy animals.
Amen

Civilized eh?. Probably explains why its still an option in Canada, we do live in igloos and make our living in the fur trade industry so..........
Just in case there's any question... this is not a political thing for me. I'm not a member of any clubs, or part of any "movement". I own neither soap box nor pulpet. I speak solely from my personal experiences, observations, and feelings on the matter. I have to assume that, what's actually involved with the process of declawing a pet, is not necessarily common knowledge... because it's hard to imagine a right-minded, stable, rational person that would think it's acceptable to do that to another living creature at ALL, but especially for nothing more than convenience! Just as sure as they have soft fur and cute little noses... cats have claws, and will instinctively use them. If you can't handle that... then you don't want a cat. It's just that simple.

is completely different, but it looks like it's totally random cause nobody mention about it when they sell the product.

i'm about the buy a Vintage Pro and if there are random dark toned fingerboards i definitely want to buy that.
I think the only way you could make that happen, is if you have a connection at your local store (or maybe Sweetwater), where they would be willing to take the time to look through their stock & select the darkest fretboard for you.

there is an inconsistency in the fingerboard wood for sure.
my ebony bird has really, i mean really dark/black fingerboard, but i've seen a lot of other ebony birds with light brown.
so i'm confused what's up.
I don't think it's really much of a mystery. For one thing... Epiphone has been really dodgy about the subject of fretboard woods on the VP. The only way we've established that rosewood is currently being used, is by hearing it from the people who've actually received theirs. It's possible that they're using other woods as well... perhaps in different markets or something (purely speculation on my part). Also, "rosewood" is still a pretty vague term. I'm sure you're aware there are different kinds of rosewood...but in addition to that... if you plant 2 of the same kind of trees, in different atmospheric conditions, they will grow to look quite different (tighter/looser grains, lighter/darker colors, etc). I wouldn't be surprised if Epi is getting rosewood from all around the world. I agree it would be nice to have some consistency and predictability... but I don't think you'll find that in a mass-produced, $600.00 bass.

Those look like the same photo, with the second one being exposure and sharpness "adjusted" in Photoshop.

So I have a line on a nice looking ebony Thunderbird IV for what seems like a good price ($1000 Canadian is pretty good, right? That's about US$1300US$750, sorry got the exchange backwards, I know what I meant but my fingers got away from me).
Model # is BAT4EBBC. It's got those black encased ceramic humbuckers, so I figured I might want to swap them out for something a bit more classic -- alnico? with chrome or nickel covers. Maybe replace the bridge with chrome too. What's good/available? I know Seymour Duncan custom shop does em. Anyone else?

Anyone have a source for repro ashtrays? I like having a cover over the pickup -- have them on my PBass and on the Jazz, and had one on my Rick.

Ya got yer dollars backwards, $1000 USD is about $1300 CAD. So $1000 CAD is around $750 USD which is a really good deal if there’s nothing wrong with it.

As for pickups and chrome covers, the nice lady above posted a good link for both I believe.
