no...not at all....it was there to match gibson's awful height and protect the paint some what....I talked with the mr jeff babicz himself and he said absolutely it can come out....you just adjust your string height. it's now fantastic and fast to play those IRON MAIDEN AND RUSH riffs! you don't need such a ridiculous angle as the stock....look at the early birds.

Any issue with the length of the mounting bolts after removal of the spacer?

That’s what I’m thinking. These days, except for a small minority who still love big tube amps, unless a SS amp weighs under 5lbs, you can barely give em away. I’ve heard people in gen pop talk about 10lb amps as though no one could possibly be expected to hoist such a boat anchor. Same with cabs. Goes a long way toward explaining why so many bass players sound so awful. Not that a light rig can’t sound good, it just ain’t my primary consideration every gig.

All that to say, seems like a great time to snatch up nice SS and hybrids. Even GK rb amps are cheap and those are great amps! I’m just getting oddly nostalgic for old Sunn, Marshall, Sound City and the like

you can pick up the 120s under a grand pretty easily... but these 200s are a little tougher to come by...

I agree. The concept of a light, compact bass rig appeals to me as much as the next guy, but I'm not sold on the reliability and serviceability of amps that are smaller than a car stereo. I am one of those tube amp guys, but a couple years ago I picked up a Crate BT350 head in Anvil case for cheap. I love this thing. It is the only "professional" bass amp that Crate ever built, and its roots are decidedly Ampeg. Tube preamp, onboard chorus, 350w@4 ohms (410 with the limiter off, supposedly). When you're used to the weight of all-tube stuff, it ain't too bad.

Ah okay then, 400W in a 22kg box, that really IS impressive. If they took out all of those damned sliders and associated circuitry, would be even lighter ... just saying.

Anyone tried to install new strings on their VP beast yet?

I did, and quickly found out that it's a darn long distance from the ball end of the bridge to the G string post. When you add a few inches for a proper 2 to 3 full wraps around that post you quickly figure out that you'll need about 49 inches of G string to make things work well. I think some of my go to strings might fall short of that.

So, what strings come stock with the VP? And if you've done a replacement, what did you use?

I found the stock strings to be a bit zingy and noisy on slides but they seem to also be wearing in and mellowing out quickly so it's getting a bit more tolerable. I'd like to switch to a nice mellow flat on this bass. Roto 77 Jazz flats or maybe La Bella Deep talkin flats or ???

You don't have to use the graphic EQ if you don't want to. Given the relative size of the graphic in my D-180, it probably adds far less than a kg.

On both my Birds, it's about 108cm (43 1/2") from the ball ends to the G tuner. What is it on the VP?
