Swapped for a JJ5751 gold pin. I can hear zero difference between the two. Thank goodness pre tubes are cheap :)

Really? 12AX7 gain = 100, while the 5751 = 70. Should be a bit of a decrease there.

I'm really coming around to the idea you need someone to look at it.

A trusty Theremin wired into an oil can delay.... I'm on a mission now! The 7enderBirds are just about done, and that means another ill conceived project is immanent.

I really like swapping 12AX7s for lower powered preamp tubes in little guitar amps to make them sound like they are about to blow up without having the neighbors call the cops. Flog the crap out of the preamp tubes! Bass amps are the exact opposite in my world. The longer it takes for any breakup, the happier I am. Give me all of Montana full of clean headroom and I'm a happy bass player.

Well, I live fairly close to Canada. And, the band I play drums in is losing its bass player to Canada next month. So, that makes sense. We all start to look like that after a while.

If the Theremin and oil can noise project gets underway, I'll dedicate the upcoming gold record to Kat, who had the idea in the first place.

Or, in the little guitar amps, it's the first side of V1, gain pot, second side of V1, then V2, which is the power valve. Really and truly nothing to it. There are a few caps and resisters to monkey with and swap around to create fake rectifier sag (not really a thing with a single power tube), raise or lower plate voltages in the power valve, and all that. It's what a schematic and a soldering iron are for.

Remember that Bluesman Vintage that was posted on the GC website a few days ago? It’s at my local GC.
Gave it a spin just for kicks.

It’s kinda neat, but for me it wasn’t $2k kinda neat. Neck was a bit clumsy in the lower registers compared to my Gibson’s. Nice, light weight. Looks nice enough in its own way. Strings were beyond dead, though it still had a very meaty, clear sound with a pleasant clack at the front of the note. I could see someone liking this bass, but that someone won’t be me :)

You can’t even order a non relic’d bass from Bluesman as far as I know. Just various levels of relic. They artificially age the hardware and pickup covers too.
