Thunderbird Club

You’ve heard the opinions of those who know what they’re talking about, so now here are my thoughts on the Vintage Pro. Sorry for the rubbish sound and appalling technique, but there you go!

Great review! Nice playing! Thanks for that, Pete!

...but that wallpaper... that wasn’t leftover from the previous tenant/owner? :roflmao:;)

I was almost too distracted by that fabulous wall paper to pay attention to the review! The bass sounds great. I'm actually surprised at how much I like the sound through the MarkBass amp. Really dig that overdrive tone as well. Really though, the wallpaper is just amazing.

Almost?!? I could barely watch Pete!

The wallpaper was a lucky find in the bargain bin at Homebase last year - it brightens up my playroom/study a bit that’s for sure!

Bargain bin... you don’t say? :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

As much as I like the other 2 sets of knobs and will keep them for future use, no poll is necessary. I think the abalone look schweeeet! I'm a little disappointed they are not primarily blue/green as was specifically stated in the ad, but I still like ' em.

Looks great, Aimee!

Thunderbird in action at last nights gig. There were people there that I did not know personally, so it was a success!

Congrats on the successful gig, bylar! But a sticker on a Gibson... that’s just crazy!!! :woot:

Lucky for Homebase or lucky for you?

Exactly!

Crank this waaaay up!. Vintage Thunderbird content.

Sweet and good to see you posting, Prog!

Cheers Dude!. cheers-emoji.png

Can I say this here?, I miss you Prog.
You too ,your F:jawdrop::jawdrop:k'n awesome Bro!. Lots of awesome around these parts. I spread myself around randomly with the little time I spend online recently. I just recorded the bass track today for one of our tunes, I used the Thunderbacker and it offered explosive leadership quality to the song. I can play that song with any of my basses but that song has Thunderbacker character DNA all over and through it. I'll post that one eventually.

Apart from steering clear of combos, my only other specific class D amp buying advice is don't buy A***g.

If you read Dante's Inferno, you'll get to the bit where the Third Circle of Hell is populated solely by dead PF500s.
Too bad I'm the only one that's "dramatic" around here... that one woulda been pretty good!:roflmao:

I have a D800. Not a bad amp at all for what I use it for (doubling and upright gigs). It’s also been crazy reliable, so I can’t throw all class D amps into the same bin. But if I name off my all time favorite amps, it won’t be on the list, if that makes sense

Yeah, my PF 500 turned out to be an expensive doorstop, Streamliner 900 has been fine if a little bottom heavy, but Class D is here to stay. My backup is a 1990s USA single rackspace 150 watt Ampeg B-1 with two 12AX7 pre and mosfet power.

6.5 pounds for the Genz, 15 for the toroidal tranny Pig.

I guess this is my 'Vintage Sunday' post...Tort!

"Explosive Leadership"!!!!!, that's what counts. doesn't matter what bass we play.

I deaden the upright for loud gigs. Sounds better with less overtones to me in that context, but I’m not going for an ultra realistic acoustic tone, either
I do the same kind of thing. It kinda sounds like an upright, but what with the wireless, HPF, and ToneHammer, it's not entirely an upright sound that gets to the amp, and then there's the amp. It makes for some kinda odd sounds with the bow sometimes. That's fine. Audiences tend to crap themselves when the bass player pulls out a bow. Even if the bass player kinda sucks at playing with a bow. If they were a little more sophisticated, I would be screwed!

I'm not trying to piss on anyone's chips here .... but I would never consider a bass combo for anything other than a home practice amp. It's easier to carry head+cab separately, if the electronics blow up it's easier/possible to connect to your backup, it's possible to upgrade incrementally/mix and match as what you actually want and need evolves over time.

A lot of class D amps have a headphone out, so should you go down that road, you can buy a head, use it with headphones and then wait until the right cab comes along.
I use a little Carvin combo with an extension cabinet on a regular basis. It isn't perfect, but it works just fine for small gigs. That said, if the amplifier part ever quits working, the chances of getting it fixed are about zero, so I'll probably replace it with a head and one or two small cabinets. I hope that's a while from now.

I wouldn't suggest buying an A***g unless it's an old B15 or B18 anyway. And one of those old fliptops isn't the most practical amp for most things.
