I understand why they'd want to try to go in that direction, but it seems to me that people who want that kind of versatility in tone will get something like a good quality PJ, and would want to let the TBird do what a TBird does. Guess time will tell soon enough if it's gonna work out for Gibson or not...like another 8 or 9 months...

Nice, like the RD. Our guitar player has a guitar version and the pickups are SO hot and I find it awkward to play. The neck is wide and it feels like the way it sits, the neck is trying to get away from me. It's sort of putting me off looking for one. But I LOVE the look of them.

The neck is certainly a handful, but I was looking to try a chunky neck anyway. I must say I find it more appealing than I thought, not that difficult to play. Mine is fortunately not heavy and also not a diver, I just hit jackpot with this one.
I like the way the RDs look, but when I tried a Novoselic reissue it was just no cigar. If I'm honest, I bought this one more for it's novelty value as a real conscious buy, but I'm so positively surprised with it that I think it is the one to end my GAS... for the next few weeks.

I think for the 2015 Thunderbird, Gibson decided since they were only releasing 3 basses, they'd roll the now cancelled EB4 electronics into the T-Bird. That's effectively what they are. Modern pickup config in a classic body. Then they have the LP Bass (which I have not seen IRL) and the EBO. Two short scales, one "muddy" and one "humbuckery" and a do-it-all full scale.

I have found myself a 1990 Greco thunderbird.
I really like it. I had bought an epiphone classic pro but found the neck too small & spindley for my liking.
It is dark sounding but with the right string choice it should be fine. I love the P bass like neck & the overall solidness of it.

Just one small issue!
The thunderbird emblem on the pickguard is all but rubbed off.
Does anyone know where I could buy an emblem transfer to apply.
I thought about just buying a new epiphone pickguard but the shape is slightly different on the Greco
Any advice most welcome!

Greco's really are great basses, that's a sweetie! To fix the PG you could get some artist's acrylic paint and slightly thin it so flows into the design - Use 70% isopropyl alcohol to thin it, and easily wipe off any excess with a small damp rag.

Lovely, great score!
These are uncommon. I have seen a few modded Standards and a couple with repaired headstock breaks, so an original one is a score. As you say, only a relatively small number were made and I understand only about 100 were black with the ebony board. So I couldn't resist this black one when it became available a few years back. I have since bought a NOS loaded guard which I have put away. They only used these pickups in this model. Great basses with a tone all their own and quite different to the RD Artist actually. Both monster basses.
As you say, I find them quite well balanced- I suspect because of the heavy body.
I think you will be glad you held off buying the Krist.
