When I asked about a raised center MAX42 you didn't seem to thrilled with the idea, IIRC. That was probably a couple of years ago by now.

I could be wrong... but I believe I have the version of T-bird pups that reside nearest the bottom of the barrel (stock '08 Korean bolt-on Epi), and they don't sound anything like those in the video either. Mine are much more lively and 'clear' than that. I can pick up what Vee's layin' down though, with regards to the differences in character. To my ears, I'm guessin' that those pups maintain gutsy "Gibson humbuckerness", but offer a little more top end, better clarity, & maybe a little hotter output, than you would normally get out of a T-bird pup. I believe that the video is an exaggeration of those differences... but it points me in the general direction

I find that the pickups that come with a Korean bolt-on 'Bird are very good in their own right. Put Black Beauties on one of those bass guitars and it's formidable.

You're right! At that time I wanted to differentiate the 'modern' MAX from the 'traditional' REV. It also kept things simpler and prices down.

These days I'm doing fewer builds at higher prices so I'm open to providing options unavailable in a mass produced product.

Basically every build at this point is a one off.

Yes, yours sounds "clearer & more lively'.
The thing I was picking up in the other clip that I felt was similar to my "old" TBird TB+ pickups was the muffled sound.
It also lacked brightness.

I have heard that the actual pickups in those black plastic TB+ covers have changed over the years and that may explain it.
I am glad they aren't all the same. My reticence to get another bass with those pickups was one of the reasons I hesitated a bit too long on a 2013 Non Reverse RI in Japan recently.

I find that there's so much variation in tone that depends on where I play in correlation to the location of the P/Ups. In front of them, over them or behind them all sound different to me.

Don't like the tone, move your playing position around, mix the P/Ups with volume pots, fiddle with the tone pot... lots of options.

I agree! When I first got mine... the sound was "ok", but kinda weak & dull. I figured, "Hey... this is what ya get in a 2 hunnerd dollar bass. I'll deal with it when I can". A friend was kind enough to set me up with a pair of Gibson pups to put in it, but I put the cart before the horse, & ripped everything out of it, and was all geared up to put 'em in when I found out that the Gibson pups were too wide for my routs... and I didn't feel much like whittling at the time. I was smart enough to have taken pics of everything when I was taking it apart, but things weren't jiving. Between my pics, some wiring diagrams, and a very patient Kat... I was able to deduce that the wiring had been all phvcked up previously. After adding new pots & rewiring... I've been quite pleased with those stock Epi pups, and really don't feel inclined to "upgrade" at all.

Those bass guitars are their own thing with their own sound. you like 'em or you don't, but they are just fine as-is. I like them well enough to keep one around for its own virtues. Eventually, it will have a Dimarzio One up by the neck. But, that's eventually.
