Thanks guys. Just wondered if you guys who play thunderbirds use it as purely as a rock bass! I’m finding it quite versatile.

Project CHROME is underway!
Pickups should arrive next week. I accidentally ordered satin chrome tuners instead of shiny chrome, but they look nice to me and the posts are nice and shiny. If it bugs me down the line, I’ll swap em out later

Excellent thanks. The Epiphone Vintage Pro is a fantastic bass. I feel a bit bad at that because I’d love a Gibson Thunderbird but from what I’ve heard sometimes the Epiphones do it better! I dunno is that a fair comment?

I use a 'Bird for all kinds of things. One of mine is fretless, which opens up all kinds of other uses beyond the endless number of things you can do with fretted bass guitars. My opinion and experience: if you can play it on a bass guitar, you can play it with a Thunderbird.

Depends on who you ask, I reckon! The VP is totally legit. I have two Gibson’s and a Cataldo and am giddy. Many wish Gibson would go back to the vintage styling with the larger headstock, old style bridge and nickel hardware and pickup covers. In that case, Epiphone did what Gibson won’t. So just go with what you like and you’re good to go
I have a 2002 and a 2014 Gibson. They feel a little different from a VP and sound a lot different, which isn’t to say one is better than the other.

That’s the 2002. I could’ve gone either way, but the ‘02 has some slight shielding issues, so I can get everything dealt with at once. I actually ordered new pickups. They get to me in a week or so

It's a fair comment, over the years countless folks have wished Gibson would do what Epiphone did with the Vintage Pro. That said, I have Gibsons as well and I like them very much.

I have a TB ‘66 in my Cataldo and love it! Also love the ‘63’s and have a weird feeling I would go that route on a two pickup bass. But for the ‘02, I ordered Lollars. Just had to satisfy my curiosity. I’ve now tried TB 63, 66, Stock Gibson’s and the #706 found in the VP’s. All good pickups in different ways. Oh, I also tried Flying Mojo’s in a Bluesman Vintage, but the strings were so dead it was hard to tell. If I didn’t get Lollars I’d always wonder, this way at least I’ll know what I think. Worse case, I’ll sell em at a small loss and get some TB’s
I put the Lollars in my '14 and really like them. If you want to use pickup rings but not put screws in the bass, I created "dummy" pickup rings for mine.
I bought 2 sets of pickup rings from ebay. I painted one set, flat black to act as the spacer. Then used super glue to glue the two rings together.
Then I cut the heads off small truss rod cover screws and super glued them on pick up ring. Finally I used a couple of small dots of Shoe Goop to adhere them to the body. It does not mess up the nitro finish and you can easily remove them if need be by sliding a piece of dental floss between the ring and the body.
So far they are rock solid. Lots of jumping around and sweat at gigs and zero issues.
