I still can’t understand this reasoning. Headstocks come in all shapes and sizes. Is he saying the same length string (without cutting) will work for both a Thunderbird’s G string tuning post and bass with a 2+2 headstock where the post is really close to the nut?
The tail is the length it is for a purpose.
With multi-layer windings, the first inner winding will grip to the hexagon core but the others, up to an additional 2 on the 105, rely on `locking off` at the tail. Each winding is applied in an opposing direction.
Because the 11" of tail has proven to be the ideal length to prevent any slippage whatsoever, the integrity of the string should always prove good and respond as it should.
Once the length is shortened then you run the risk of slippage or relaxation of the tension, if only slight, to begin with and worsen as the tail shortens.
