Thunderbird Club

Sidenote: I like the idea of making the bass string thru...that will definitely help any issues with intonating the E string, or having the wraps riding the saddle!

String-thru is a great mod for T-birds. I did my own years ago w/modified hw. (I had trouble finding this size ferrules at the time) They were standard on the RD's.

Ah, yes. The plastic casing peels off the same way. The coils are sunk into an exopy block that the plastic covers - pretty much the same as that Burny pickup above.

I finally managed to make that picture work and noticed your 2-tone hardware. Was that a special order option from hipshot? I'd love that look!

I had another HS bridge on a bass that had the same saddles in chrome plated brass, so I swapped them. The bolts I got at a hardware store. It really helps visually to lighten up these bulky-looking bridges. (but I do like how they function- especially w/string-thru)

Here's the question:

If I go forward with my Studio V mod of putting chrome covers on the pups, I'll be tearing off the factory original black covers to do the install. I didn't know that prior to ordering the covers but after seeing the pics posted of what the mod entails I'm not sure that I should "destroy" the original-"ness" of this bass. I'm thinking that it'll diminish the collectability/value of this bass. I could always buy new pups to mod so that I keep the originals available for resale. Would that be worth it? Thoughts?

Personally, I'd leave the pups on the Studio alone. If you don't like the tone I'd replace the pickups - of course Mike Lull has some that'll drop right in, they are a drop in replacement.

For the collectability factor?

I do like the tone, in fact. I like it better than my IV. So what I'm hearing is if you want chrome pups, just order some chrome pups, swap out the originals, keeping the originals alone to swap back in if the day ever comes to sell the Studio V.

OK, who wants the chrome covers I just bought on eBay? I'll eat the shipping both ways, from eBay to me and from me to you.

$30 for the pair, PM me.

If you still have these when my bird arrives, I'll take them. :)

A problem that some people report with the Studio V pickups is that they don't cover the B string properly because they are the exact same pickup used in the narrower four string studio. If you like the sound, leave them.

ThunderBucker Ranch makes an extended version pickup for Fivers. They have the same exterior dimension as the four but the magnetic field is wider. I use them in my Fivers.

Mike Lull's Fiver pickups are wider than his four strings. They won't fit in your Studio unless you route the body out.

I know good advice when I hear it! I'm going to leave her alone, factory spec for this TBird. Thanks!

Beautiful Cataldos, BTW! Of course you already know that.

Another question. Fender has a HUGE parts catalog where you can order individual parts for most production basses.
Does Gibson have the same thing? I can't find a list. I'd love to get a black T-bird Pro-IV pickguard for my White classic-IV, but I can't find a part number to give to my dealer.

Nope. You can't order a black pickguard or white for that matter, from Gibson. I went down this road and was told by Gibson that pickguards are warranty items that require Gibson service and that the luthier could not just order me a black one... so I made my own and put my own vinyl thunderbird decal on it.

Hmm. I'm not really skilled enough to do this myself. :( Waterslide decals are my nemesis, and I'm terrible with cutting. lol
I wonder why a Gibson dealer couldn't "Do the swap" for me? ;)
