Thunderbird Club

The one take away? I am going to need to refrain from playing any punk in the future as I cannot do the non-conformist kick, while playing bass and wearing non-conformist boots. I could MAYBE pull off wearing the non-conformist skirt and tights, in sort of a circa 1980s Paul Westerberg SNL way. But that's it.

Eeeeeeee. The leather jacket is too constricting in the elbows and the zips will scratch the nitro. Those tartan pants? tights? are shocking. I never wear nail polish. My hair used to be that colour though.

Me too :/

That photo is about as punk rock as my mom
Your mom plays Thunderbirds and now, NOW, you finally pick one (or three) up?!

My hair was similar for a brief period, was supposed to be red... didn't work. Then I tried to go blue, but it turned really dark, colour shift, purple. Was pretty cool.

Damn marketing BS. Even if i could pull off tights and boots, which i can't. I just wouldn't. Besides, the person has to be cool to begin with to play a Bird. And if you ain't..................
EDIT: I'm not that cool.

Hmm, well I may buy the same tea all the time, but only because it was on offer at the supermarket and I liked it more than other tea. Suppose in a way that is 'marketing' but not advertising. If I try something and like it, I'll stick with it. The problem is getting me to try it in the first place, or even to form the idea that I want it, let alone need it. On the other hand, the Mod will have three stripes on his tomb stone.

Three stripes???

At the risk of sounding boastful... I'm pretty proud of the drummer I became. Musicians wanted to play with me. Even ones I'd never met. I never quite figured out how to process that. It sure did make me feel good though:)

You may have told the story before, but why did you ditch the drums and switch to bass?

Tights and boots, check.

Purple hair, check.

Thunderbird, check

What were we doing again?

Gibson is in real danger of actual bankruptcy. Their credit rating is beyond terrible and they're not gonna be able to refinance at anything resembling a favorable rate, if they can find anyone to take that on. Seems one of their issues is excess inventory. They're all about lean manufacturing, but they ship to warehouses and carry a ton of inventory. Add to that their ridiculous dealer terms and you end up with a lot of finished inventory unsold. You can't find them at anything but the big box stores and sites. 7ender did that for many years too until they wised up and realized the product has to be available in order to sell it.
It needs to be affordable, too.

I am always nice to the sound person as well...never understood why people would get weird with someone who can ruin your gig!
...
Just got home from the gig! It went well...terrible recording, but a pal took a short bit of video. The amp is much better now, though I’m still dialing it in. Also never played the T Bird with the Lollars live...that made me happy :)

A musician buddy said he thought the whole rig was the ‘magic combo.’ It sure didn’t suck!

Ditto on the sound guy thing.

And love the tone and playing.

Still not sure why I subscribed to that “what would you do to save Gibson” thread. Some of the dopiest posts I’ve read. Did you know Gene Simmons was pretty much the only popular bass player to play a Gibson? Did you know Gibson owns Guitar Center? Did you know Gibson is THE MOST overrated brand on the market currently? Or that $2k for a US made instrument is ‘insanely overpriced?’
Way to start the morning :/
Sure. Doesn't everyone know that?
EXCEPT...
GENE SIMMONS... DID NOT PLAY A GIBSON!
HE PLAYED A CARVIN DISGUISED AS A GIBSON. HE SOLD ALL HIS GIBSONS TO PAY FOR HIS TONGUE STEROIDS.
JUST ASK THE CIA.
Do you have any idea how much I want to go troll that thread?

I might have to step away a bit to do some consulting in another thread about how to save Gibson. Just because I don’t have the ‘education’ or ‘knowledge’ in finance and market trends, I’m confident I can tell a Harvard MBA grad the best way to run a billion dollar business. I’ll contribute things like, “my Squier smokes any Gibson ever made.” Or maybe, “I hope they go under since they don’t make an active 7 string anyway.”
At those prices, we all expect a built-in beat box. That's part of why they're failing.

Now THAT is more like it. Great shot. Some glam and some punk, with someone actually rock’n their Thunderbird.

How many of us on this list, who have purchased a new Epi or Gibson bass, have sent in their warranty cards over the years? They should have a huge database of bass players, who would probably be more than happy to be on a consumer panel to answer surveys or do focus groups. As Will noted earlier about the 2013/2014 EB model (which is really great) or the ill-fated auto-tune stuff, they don’t seem to understand their consumers or to be interested in learning. Market research costs money but so does cranking out stuff that doesn’t sell and/or has to be put on a fire sale.
