Thunderbird Club

Variations in the weight of the wood account for nearly all that weight difference. Mine is nine pounds even but when I bought it from sweetwater they had some listed that weighed nearly 10 pounds and one that was under 9 pounds. I read on TB somewhere that someone purchased the heaviest one they had thinking it would eliminate neck dive. Turns out all the extra weight was in the neck and headstock and it suffered from massive dive. Mine is pretty well balanced, with no dive.

Edit: I just remembered that Eppi has changed up on the VP tuners, so there could be a bit of weight difference there but it wouldn't be much.

Scott had mentioned the new tuners now have tapered posts. Too bad they went that route. Prefer non tapered.

You can probably drop weight quicker and easier by switching to light weight tuners and a light weight bridge. Then there's always alumatone pickups, which I think are also lighter than stock pups. If you did all that you might drop a pound or two.
My vp weighs under 7 pounds . It had a chunk of laquer busted off on the upper back body wing when I got it . But it is the perfect bass in weight playability and sound and is the first I've ever ordered ( other than my first bass: a Rickenbacker 4003 wineglow back in 1980.) I put the back straplock about five inches higher than the stock strap peg ; that makes a huge difference in any neck dive issues plus a good wide leather strap helps . Although I can feel the weight in the neck ,neck dive issues are negligable.

Yes of course, but I'm not trying to lost weight, it's just that often, PU varnish represents a certain percentage of the weight of the bass, by its thickness.

Also, I have a big preference for nitro finish ( i like relic !), I would like to refinish my Classic in cream and the VP in the real 76 finish with medium relic.

You mean, favoring the three point?

I do, personally favor a Three point, yes. The bass for sale is a refin, were I changing the bridge from a Three point to something else a two point like my Orville has......

Or a Bad Bird II conversion like my Greco.

That's awesome, never heard of a VP in the six pound and some ounces weight class! Sounds like a keeper.

While we are at it, this one might be a little NSFW, depending on what kind of construction site or polite office you live in. But no prisoners.

It's sunny and at least 50 degrees here today, you need to go mow your lawn!

I'm rewiring some circuits in the basement. What a waste of a great day!
