Thunderbird Club

hello Gibson Thunderbird club, how goes it?

Im in the process of choosing my very first tbird for I have delayed for too long this decision. NOT ANYMORE. I am currently checking my options on reverb and ebay, but I'm also considering picking up a brand new one at a local dealer.

I came here today to see what I should know about these basses, for I have something close to 0 knowledge about gibson basses.

Could you perhaps shed a little light on the subject for a soon to be tbird owner?

cheers!
Second on the Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV...in Alpine White it's perfect. Neck-through construction and Gibson pickups, too...for 1/3 the price of a new Gibson.

thanks for the replies!

I have been trying to find an epi classic pro .. but it hasn't been easy due to the whole living in Brazil thing...

however, I found this: Gibson Thunderbird 1990 Burst | Reverb

why is this from the 90s so much cheaper than the others.. do the tbirds have specific eras where they were "better" and others where they weren't as good?

what about this nikki sixx sig? Used Gibson Nikki Sixx Signature Thunderbird Bass 2012 | Reverb

or the studio tbirds? Gibson Thunderbird Studio Bass 2007 | Reverb

Not a great deal, but I found the description kinda funny. At least the guy is consistent.

Oh amd the new baby has been shipped. Yea!

That might be a good name for a band: Subjagation of the Galaxy

I particular like this part:

"Also a staple has been carefully inserted into the rear of the body. I don't recall why I did this, but I'm sure it made sense at the time" :D

I see!

it really isnt a matter of being able to afford it or not .. but knowing the differences, peculiarities and whatnot of each different model! I mean .. I can tell the diference between pbass and stingrays throughout the years.. but not thunderbirds!

Well, play one if you can. They're definitely a whole different animal.
I sold an Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV about a year ago and every week I check craigslist and ebay hoping the local guy I sold it to puts it up for s

Wow, if you can afford the Nikki Sixx one you should consider this.

They've added the better bridge...original is included.
Nicest Gibson made, imo.
Gibson Thunderbird Bass - 50th Anniversary 2013 Gold Bullion | Reverb

That right there would steer me clear of that gold bird.
I like the hipshot bridge, have them on 2 epi's, but they imprint on the body and leave a hipshot shape on the body permanently.
No way id do that to a gibson.
Nothing wrong with the 3 point, hipshot is just easier to adjust (read that as I can be a lot lazier setting it up)...I'll gladly work 10% harder to avoid jacking up a nice bass.

I have a t-bird pro IV and a Buddy has a sunburst bolt on IV. Will the White pickguard of the IV fit my pro and the other way round?

Most likely no...

I have several bolt-ons , a Pro-V and a Classic Pro-IV and they all have slightly different shaped pick guards.

You may be lucky they match shape-wise, but you can be shure the screw holes won't match at all.

The Pro-V and Classic Pro-IV that I have are the ones that come closest in regards to shape and screw holes of the pickguard, and still there are differences...

Completely agree, they are very different model to model and Epi to Gibson but here's the thing. As long as each PG covers the other's screw holes, no one will be the wiser and switching back and forth will work too. Take them both off and see if you have hole coverage.

There is a used studio gibby with case and a small fender bass amp for $400 in LA area, the headstock has a smiley face crack though. If anyone is wanting it I maybe able to help get it to you, its in Thousand Oaks CA

Headstock repairs seem to run $100-150. Could be a good deal for someone to snag it and get it fixed.

Personally I don't like drilling extra holes in my stuff, another option is to get an undrilled pickguard from Larry here and drill it to match your current PG.

Wouldn't bother me because I wouldn't take it off and I wouldn't sell it. I think I'm done selling basses.
Not done buying them, though.
I missed out on one for $1,400...if Guitar Center only had a 60-day layaway policy it would've been mine. I'd add the Babicz bridge, however.
I plan on putting one on my Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV...when I finally buy one, that is.

Im going to have to acquire some sort of case for the newest member of the family.

Thinking about getting a gig bag, a lot of people really lik them. I like to take good care of my stuff so sime cheepo just wont do. What do you guys use/recommended?
I bought a Gator Go Pro for my Epiphone Pro IV...this bass is longer than the regular Epiphone Thunderbirds by about 2 inches but it fits fine. Very good padding, good neck support, and the walls get quite stiff when you zip up the bag.
Won't fit in Momo cases, according to the Momo rep I spoke too, not sure about the new Gig Blade...they just lowered the price from $250 to $199, though and the inside dimensions sound right.
The Gator goes for $150. I still have mine and use it for everything except my Dean Exotica acoustic bass

Had to remove the extra pad from the bottom of the bag...Velcro. You can see it under the bag's corner.
