Thunderbird Club

I let my set up guy talk me into rounds........but I'm sure it will end up with a set of flats before I make any kind of final decision!

The two kinds that seem to get used a lot in this Club are the Cobalt Flats and the Chrome Flats. I also have GHS Tapewounds on my 2013 Gibson TBird and like them a lot for the feel of Flats and a nice full dark tone.

I believe your set up guy posted a video on setting up this particular bass? :p I seem to have seen this particular bass & case smell i

He sure did! Love Dave, and he does great work. You have to know him to appreciate his sense of humour. Thunderturd! Have to love it! He's a born and bred Fender guy for sure.........

He has this bass tuned up great.

Currently have Chromes on my basses but have used TI's and Sadowsky flats and tapes on an old Epiphone hollowbody. We play a lot of Country......not sure this Bird with rounds is a better choice then the Precisions. Already wishing I had put flats on it.

I would love to have Dave do a set up on any of my basses, unfortunately I'm quite a ways away from him.

Is said gentleman Canadian? Lol

Indeed he is :P

His humor makes the videos worth while. I also get to understand a bit more just by watching him do a few things - especially set ups. He might dislike the 3 point bridge, like many do, but i've no problem setting one up properly.

There are those who play country on 'Birds. I have done it on occasion. I am currently using a bolt-on Epiphone Thunderbird in a surf band. It has rounds on it for now. I haven't decided if that is how it will stay. Cobalt flats may go on it eventually.

Congratulations on your new Thunderbird :)
I'd be more than happy to add you to our club good Sir!

Thank you! I'm digging it right now.......let's hold off on the number until I'm sure it's going to stay with me! I've been playing Precisions with flats for so long.....this beast with rounds is a leap for me.
Any time you want to join you're always welcome. That's a very cool TBird, congrats on the purchase, and happy NBD!

As a fellow Fender player with Precision bass as my go to Fender what I found with my first TBird is that it sounded bold, thick and full, it sat in the mix nicely with nickel round wounds when played finger style. With a pic the TBird cops a cool aggressive attitude and sits much more forward in the mix. To my surprise when I put flats on my Bird I dropped into very familiar P bass territory but maintained some of the aggressive nature when digging in.

I'd suggest you try your favorite flats on it, I suspect you'll quickly realize that your Bird is every bit as capable as your P bass in fitting in any type of music. Think of it as a P bass on steroids with a sexy svelt body and a slim fast neck. Also, be prepared to step into the spotlight anytime you dig in, these are not shy basses.

Thanks! Watched the whole thing including his unboxing and mail stuff. Like Haji said, this dude doesn't seem to like anything non-FSO.

A couple of things made my left eye twitch while watching him work on your bass but I'm sure he dialed it in since he has a ton of setup experience and knows how it should be when he's done.

I hope you give it enough time to see how you really feel about your TBird... especially with a variety of stings.

I heard BaCH built a total of 400 NRs. Don't know how true that is.

No, no where near that many. Rob van den Broek @Basvarken can probably give you the numbers for each group that were produced. It was a project that started way back, I think in the days of "The Dudepit".

Hi there! Congratulations on your big beautiful 'bird! The ergos, neck profile, and tone are probably quite a departure from what you're used to. I personally would've encouraged you to start with flats on it, simply due to the fact that it's one less alienating hurdle to clear on your quest. The rounds are better for achieving what is affectionately known as "Angry Piano Tone" around these parts (for which, you may decide you have a taste;)). @dukeorock is a busy, working musician who uses his 'birds for Country, Blues, and a variety of rocks and/or rolls, and he gets great results! I hope your foray into the "Thunderzone" proves to be fun and fruitful!:bassist:

Enjoy!

LOL - I always get a kick out of Dave. He's very competent and equally opinionated with a pretty strong bias against anything that isn't made by Fender. Looks like he did a nice job of setting yours up. However, and I can't say this strongly enough - never, ever, ever force the bow on a Gibson neck by grabbing the headstock and pushing down on it! I doubt he did any damage to yours when he did that but I can also say that quite possibly it wouldn't have taken much more force to snap the headstock right off the bass. When you put flats on your bass you'll undoubtly need to adjust the relief, DO NOT DO IT THE WAY HE DID.

There's a very good post about a dozen pages back that explains in detail the correct way to adjust the action and set your bridge height. Follow that and you'll be golden.

It seems to me that a Lot of 7ender players don't like to accept that other basses exist while most of us here don't denigrate Ps, Js, etc., we Prefer our TBirds. I can't help wondering what flavor Kool-Aid they're serving:smug:
