Thunderbird Club

Normally, I would give you a BUY IT!. But I can't for this one. The headstock looks like a Jackson, the front strap lock is in an awkward spot, and the pickups look like they are off centre (toward the G string). And why a picture of the stand? Something about it just doesn't seem right.

I believe that is basically a Jackson headstock. There was a collaboration between Gibson and Grover Jackson and this was one of the results.

Yes, up until today :). They sound fantastic with the right pickups (Thunderbuckers for me), but I still strongly prefer LaBellas. Keep in mind, I’m playing with the tone at 0 and the neck solo’d. I also changed to a .1uf cap to darken it up further.

Man, Labellas, a super dark tone cap and the tone all the way off... at what point do you just start running your bass through a lowpass filter and calling it a day? :)

I actually do for recording while I’m breaking in new strings. This probably wouldn’t be that shocking outside of a Thunderbird thread! I may be the only one here using a Tbird (one of them, anyway) for that tone, but it does it brilliantly with some minor modifications. I should have probably changed the pots to 250k while I was in there.

Mark took pics with one in Germany and talked about it being a rare Gibson. To find one in such good condition near 40 years old makes it very tempting.

I understand. But I still think there is just something wrong about it. I won't buy something for its rarity alone. If there is something I want, rarity can be the push to buy or can influence the price I am willing to pay. Rarity is a final consideration rather than a primary consideration.

I've been considering modding my T-bird and putting a 1M cap in there to really brighten things up, I want the piano sound out of mine.

Actually. what I really want to do is take my Epi Classic IV and mod it like a thunderbird II:
  • Remove the bridge pickup and fill the route
  • Replace neck pickup with chrome Thunderbucker 66N pickup
  • nickel hardware and replace bridge with better model
  • refinish in Polymist Gold or Inverness Green
Basically, make it look like this one with a few modern improvements

If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend trying out a VP. I prefer the stock pickups for that roundwound tone over my Thunderbucker. But these things are obviously 100% subjective.

Actually I run my Goth in a similar setting. Black tapes, Bart pups, Aggie OBP-2 active preamp, right hand at neck heel, finger playing only, treb knob at 10% and bass knob at 80%, neck pup solo'ed. Earth shaking bass! Won't work in every setting but does sound fantastic in many.

Note, I did install a coil split switch and Vol/Vol layout that allows me to play either or both pups in Humbucker or single coil mode. There are times when the Humbuckers just get too muddy with the settings I mentioned above, a quick flip of the switch to single coil mode solves that problem.

How about La Bella Black tapewounds?
I have a set on my Goth and they darkened it up nicely.

I thought about it, but I get the PERFECT tone with a set of broken-in 760FS. My old Road Worn P bass that I sold had a perfectly aged set, but I sold it because I was in lust with TBirds. Plus, it was sunburst/maple, and I think a P bass should be black or red with rosewood :). I have a Japanese '62 reissue in BRIGHT red with matching headstock on the way!

Gibson did that for you in 2015. They quit doing it right away for some unknown reason.

Go Ddraig!!!!

Sounds like my RW Precision. I finally put new strings on it. It had dead, dead flats on it. Dark and thumpy. I put new flats on it. It's still dark and thumpy, just not quite as muffled. Kind of a pillowy dark maroon sound that has soft edges. It is a sound I used to go for all the time. Any more, I'm spoiled by 'Bird aggression and like a brighter sound that has more shiny black and electric blue in it.

IMHO... THIS should be your headstock. By flipping the dragon inlay, it removes the visual flow that I liked... but "visual flow" is a subtle, aesthetic element. What you've done here, is far more significant. This looks like it belongs there. Sturdy, formidable, classy.

I like that too but I don't know how to do it properly, open to suggestions
Any engraver should be able to help with that. There's a store called "Things Remembered" located in about half the shopping malls in the U.S. They sell (and engrave) keepsakes, collectables, awards, etc. They'll engrave metals, stones, wood, glass... just about anything. Don't know if you might have something similar in the land of Saint David...

Just the dragon. No words. If the picture isn't good enough, then whoever is looking at it doesn't deserve any more explanation.

So, find an engraver and have them put on the truss rod cover:

Look at the picture.
If that isn't enough explanation
you don't deserve to play this.

Should just fit...
