So I decided to pick up that thunderbird pro iv. Cleaned it, set it up, new strings, one practice and then a gig on it last Saturday. Pretty nice bass, so far I like it allot better than the bolt on I used to have.
With the flash you can really see the wood and grain, but up close it's a very dark bass.
The only thing I have noticed is that the pre amp is a little noisy, I think it's a grounding issue somewhere but I'll probably just shield and ground everything eventually and that will take care of that. Also (and I should have done this with the set up) the bridge is a bit quieter than the neck pup, going to have to adjust the heights and try to even them out.
Missing the truss rod cover, anyone know where I can get one?

Yes, so here's how it gets confusing; the 1st ('63-'65) T-bird is considered reversed (?) - reversed from what would be the obvious question. I've read that Fender apparently thought it looked enough like a Jazz bass (!?!) to get them to change it. An original T-bird = Jazz bass? That's bizarre enough right there! Then the second generation body ('66-69'), essentially the reverse of the original - is called non-reverse. That's some twisted logic. Lefty versions only help make the whole reverse/non-reverse thing more absurd! It's a backward non-reverse T-bird… I don't know about smoke, but mirrors were definitely involved.

Yeah, and what's even more absurd about that whole Fender /Gibson case is, that while the original "reversed" Thunderbird has absolutely no similarity to a Fender bass - The Gibson "non-reverse" Thunderbird has a strikingly resemblance to a Fender Jaguar/Jazzmaster...

I think the thunderbird reverse was just a term coined once they created the non-reverse model. But Fender saw copyright towards their fender jaguar/jazzmaster guitars so gibson had to drop it.

So to clear it up, I'm looking to get a body like this only a mirror image not just flipped over. I did that with my skull bass.
We were talking a little about control cavities recently, since I hadn't opened my new one up yet I figured I would and snap some pictures.
It's a bit messy, but I've seen worse. The pups are 3 wire but only two wires are connected (the reds you can see are not connected to anything). Doesn't look like any shielding paint was used, I need to shield the bass and ground the electronics and hopefully that takes care of the noisy electronics.
Also, can someone explain the pre amp? I know it's volume/blend/2 band, but is it just high/low and does anyone know the frequency centers?

I could be wrong but it looks like the black carbon shielding paint to me. Does the bass buzz? Star grounding would be recommended as the way to address ground-buzz.
