1963 Gibson colour chart - And speaking of Oddball Colors… | The Gibson ES-335

It states it's a '63 chart but the illustration shows the non-reverse Firebird... (?) Sunburst was considered a 'stock' colour.

1) Golden mist 2) Silver Mist 3) Kerry Green 4) Cardinal Red 5) Heather Poly 6) Inverness Green 7) Ember Red 8) Pelham Blue 9) Frost White

Ember Red is the red I was talking about. Also, the 'aged' Pelham blue bird I mentioned was Inverness Green.

That ES-335 site shows some rare Gibson factory finishes. (plus a few Fenders that he has for sale/has sold) Every time I visit a 'vintage' guitar site and see what those guitars sell for, I'm glad to be a bass player!

For sure. It seems far more reasonable to get a decent vintage bass for a decent price.

That said, I saw a silver burst Gibson Sonex 180 in a shop in California last year and it was aged to the greeniness, and it was only $600, but I panicked about getting it back to Canada.

I never saw myself as a white bass guy, but I just really liked the alpine white classic pro. Like, inexplicably drawn to it.
I pulled the trigger and even my wife was shaking her head at me.

I love that epi, and it gets so much more attention than anything else I own, even over my gibsons and rics.

People who see it love it, people who play it buy one.

Yes, an 2009 ESP Phoenix II bass. My most recent acquisition. Picked it up used over July 4th weekend, just one previous owner. Absolutely dead mint. Has the Thunderbird feel, but active. Make a nice balance with my 2013 Gibson Thunderbird.

I think it's the iPod factor which is in effect...

After the iPod everything started to be available in white: white computers, white tv sets, white stereo's and so forth...

It's time to blaze . speaking of burst, i'm not a fan either of it. It's weird. I never see myself owning a traditional burst bird, but i do fancy the Active epiphone pro bird in burst, it looks great with the wood construction.

I've never seen one in Cardinal Red. White, Black and SB, but never Red. I wonder how many they made? Iverness Green would be rare too.

There was a guy on tb who had a factory finish Pelham blue aged to green early 60's T-bird - a real stunner. Not sure if he's a T-bird club member or not. I also recall seeing a (factory) less (Cardinal) bright red early bird years ago but perhaps it was a special order custom colour. They made 60's Firebirds in other colours so anything's possible.

Just looked this up (Vintage Guitar Magazine) - it appears there were a number of colour options in the early 60's.

($20,000 to $23,000 in custom-color finish)

Arguably Gibson’s greatest bass, the two-pickup, “reverse-body” Thunderbird IV, with its neck-through design, combines style and function like few others. With a production run painfully short at less than two years, it could be ordered in any of 10 flashy colors and is the ultimate Gibson four-string (sunburst models from the same period go for $9,000 to $13,000).
