Thunderbird Club

All my basses have d'addario 50-105, my guitars sport d'addario strings. My Tigerbird has 'hartke' strings stainless 50-110, & on a bird that gauge works great. & i've actually never played Roto's due to many people, including my father, saying it ate away at frets over time. Which left me kinda skeptical about using them predominantly. I wish i could try GHS boomers again, those were great strings.

This is a weird one, and probably just me, but I used to use heavy Boomers. 50-115 or something crazy like that. Loved em, but started wanting a bit more flexibility on some basses. Tried Boomers in 45-105 and just hated em. Died super fast and weren’t that great when they were fresh. As for Rotos, I’ve ordered nickels and they were pretty darn nice. The stainless are much easier to find, but just don’t do it for me. My current favorite strings;

STAINLESS- DR LoRiders
NICKEL- Ken Smith Bass Burners
FLATS- Cobalts
HYBRID- Black Beauty

HOW.
DOES.

NECK.

UP?
MAGIC?
;)

Wanna hear something weirder? The headstock hasn’t shattered :)

That man can do anything.
Really though, it's quite simple.
Agreed!

Step one: Stop believing the hype that all 'birds are divers.

Step two: Stop believing that neck-dive is such a big friggin' deal anyway.

Once you've recognized these 2 things as fallacies... you and your Thunderbird(s) can enjoy a lifetime of playing any kind of music your heart desires... and look better doin' it:cool::thumbsup:

From what I've seen most roundwounds will chew up the frets and fingerboard some. Boomers were my first try (I was 14) at roundwounds, they went onto my Gretsch Committee bass which had LaBella flats. Man, I didn't know what to think! They were so bright and seem to travel the width of the fingerboard every time you plucked.
I was instantly converted. Dunno if you can still get them but they used to come factory vacuum sealed so they ALWAYS sounded the same out of the wrapping. Pretty badazz strings and cheaper than Rotos back then..

What do you use on the uprights?

I haven't tried Bass Boomers... mainly due to the fact that I tried guitar Boomers, and your summarization matches my own experience to a tee.

Heeeeeeey... that IS weird! I took the trash out the other day & nearly got hit by 3 of them falling from the sky at random!;)

This will sound silly, but most of my gigs are slap style upright, so here’s my favorite combo on my bass...

E- Spiro Weich
A- Jargar Dolce (both are somewhat flexible steels)
D&G- Lenzner unwrapped gut strings

Ever try weedwackers? I have a 1/2size 60’s plywood upright that had the head snapped off. My plan is to try out weedwackers when I repair it.
(My Englehardt has steel strings on it).

You slappers and your guts! I can't get away from high tension orchestral steels. Gotta arco baby. Rotos? Swore by them on my Ric 4001 in the 70's and early 80's. Even had them on fretless.
As an addendum. To quote the legendary Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back: "I feel terrible."

OK!, heres where the critical plot twist in the Thunderbird Club has begins!. Seriously Eddie?, Check out the pipes on ol' Gomer man!. That boy can go!. Are you still sticking to your pick after witnessing this?

Yep Gomer had the Pipes for sure, but Tiny was playing a 4 string----- LOL.

Yes but!. If you would just join me for a second as we step outside ourselves and away from ourselves and experience this with an open mind that welcomes elation beyond the realm of the unknown for a second if you dont mind. Although I would love to heighten and enlighten the experience by administering over the counter technical mind altering aids I feel as this is a no brainer.....not even close. My reasoning - Let us take in this magnificently dressed two bit hick town policeman as he has the ability to push volume effortlessly into the air with the magical ability of a Pavarotti......except he is a two bit hick town policemen all done up to the nine's. Heres the thing.....For 4 minutes and change ol' Jim is literally Dreaming the Impossible Dream........Damn!. Who else can literally Dream The Impossible Dream in front of a diaper clad and fully captivated audience with such little effort and yet so much grace?. Nobody!.

In the thread Pick Two Bands I chose to go with "Jim Nabors or Tiny Tim"?........and nobody wanted to play.:crying:
Tiny Tim is the Man........................

Insanity! Jim Nabors had a huge vocal range! And used it beautifully.
