Moderately more seriously, the British Empire brought about the near universality of the English language and it's use in the USA has made it the global language of commerce. Were it not for those two things, we might all be talking either French or Dutch (perhaps both). But I think we can all agree upon our relief that Esperanto never gained any traction.
