The first few minutes I spent with a Thunderbird, changed my life! Something finally matched the sound I heard in my head, which then led to a complete paradigm shift with regards to the sound(s) I aspire to achieve, and the gear I'm into. I've heard some P-basses that can get pretty good sounding in the hands of the "right" player... but generally the woody, mid-heavy grit of passive Gibson humbuckers, would be the foundation around which I would build any custom bass if I were given the opportunity. I'm thrilled with my Gretsch Broadkaster, I really dig the sound of Rickenbackers, and I'm curious about a few other pups out there like TV Jones... but the thing I like about them (or the thing I'd look for in them), would be that they come from a similar sonic direction. Just LUUUUUUUV that sorta hollow woody mid-heavy "thunk" saturated with overtones, yet maintaining strong clarity & definition.
