Thunderbird Club

This video of my Ghia engine popped up in FB “memories”

Love those cars! Had my eye on this one for a while now...

but really know very little about Ghias. Is there a good year or a specific model that is more desirable than others?
Can I fit a Thunderbird hard case inside or do I have to buy a drop top for that?

Not quite the same style, but would probably fit a T’Bird case in the back...

For the first time since I bought the first 3 T Birds I own, I ‘cheated’ on them with one of my other basses. Used my Andrew Drake 35” scale custom bass with Prayer Flags tonight. After a long tour, two of my ‘Birds really need to see the tech. Fortunately, my Drake has TV Jones Thunderblade pickups, which have a very Gibson like quality and the body is (mostly) mahogany. My dear friend, Derek Hoke, did his debut opening as a solo electronic artist tonight and it was fantastic

When my family moved to Canada in 1970, Dad bought one of those in orange. I have many memories of that car. It was back when seatbelts were a novelty (and no one wore them). And it was one of very few cars on the market that had fuel injection.

A high school friend (a Dylan fanatic) had an older one of those with the more traditional bumpers. It was fuel injected; he never seemed to be able to get it to run right. Lots of kids had bugs; he was the only one with the wagon. He could fit a couple of coolers full of beer in the back and was very popular at drive-in movie parties.

There was only one model of Ghia from 56-74. The mechanical parts are the same as the Beetle, so pre 68 they have a swing axle tranny, and the earlier front suspension.
The 50’s are the most desirable, but hard to find in decent condition.
From mid 70 they went to the bigger bumpers mounted higher and huge tail lights. 72-74 are probably least desirable.
Realistically if you can find one that has a decent body, that is the one. They were hand built apparently without any thought given to stopping corrosion:thumbsdown:
Mine is a 71 convertible and was a basket case. I replaced most of the bottom 10” of sheet metal all around. I’ve been putting way more energy into music and other things for the past 10 years, so it’s been sitting in the garage.

In high school I had one of these:

Yep - yellow.

Getting it to run right involves taking it to a German mechanic. Maybe the manuals in German tell you the real way to tune it? You never wanted to boost the battery - it was tough to get at - it was under the back seat. But it was easy to bump start. Handled like a truck. I think it generated a whole 50HP (when new, mine was probably closer to 35).

There is a trunk in the back (above the engine) with a latch in the driver's door frame. I don't think I ever used the trunk in the front. I kept a case of beer in the back and we used to go out to my car at lunch to listen to Black Sabbath and drink beer.

My dad had a Squareback when I was a kid. It was a light grey-blue colour.
Yeah a lot of guys ripped out the fool-injection and installed dual carbs in the type 3s.
