Thunderbird Club

I'm bumping up against 14 years on my La Bella Black Tapewounds with no sign of deterioration in the wrap or the sound. Finger player only, no pic. Although I did try a felt pic with these strings and got a really cool tone. I'm not an accomplished pic player, hack at best, so I'm sure you're results would be even more interesting. Next time you're at GC get a felt pic and see if you like it.

My LaBella Black tales are less than a year old and this is encouraging to hear! I love them!

I’m more of a pick player myself and highly recommend everyone buying as many picks in different material combinations that you can an find. Picks are some of the cheapest gear you can buy and they GREATLY affect tone!

Felt picks sound great! I’ve been digging bone picks as my go-to lately.

Is this the origin of the expression "I've got a bone to pick with____"?

Aw, it’s just a low dollar Yamaha RBX 200F.
I got it to back up my 250F. They’re getting harder to find.
Nothing special, but they fit me well. Light and compact.
I’m not super crazy about the Fisher-Price Red color, but I can live with it in a nostalgic 80’s way.

Where as *love* it. Had I not found that five string TBird, I was planning to buy for a red one. I thought about painting this one til it showed up and I saw how gorgeous it is.

I think you’re right. But this thing can’t hold a candle to some of those Gibson cherry/Red ones. A three ply pearloid white PG would really put a pin in it.

Unfortunately, all Birds are not created equal. What works on one won't on another. All very subjective as a couple of mm on a saddle adjustment will make a difference on "identical" basses...
That's why you have multiple 'Birds. You find what works and once you have it sorted, you play it while you are experimenting with another one. Then when you find something else that works on that one, you can experiment on yet another one. Rinse, repeat. Works for me.

I have been known to use a quarter or penny on occasion when a song calls for a pick sound and I forgot to bring one. It's not ideal, but it works.

I got a few Birds as well, just not the time to tinker like that..
If it works I leave it be. That said, when I say "works" it has to fill all of the requirements (music type, all plucking style and technique choices, amplifier choices, settings and on and on..) that I need for my playing engagements. There are so many "knobs" in these systems, once something works across the board for me it tends to stay that way..

I decided to try a thumb pick which I can leave on while using fingers and have it "ready" when needed/wanted. Still working on it, but it seems a viable alternative.

I join this forum sporadically & when i do, damn do i have to catch up xD It`s an enjoyable read, & brings knowledge to me about how to build my next thunderbird :) But that`s much later on down the road, i still need to finish my UnGothed Epiphone bird, & i`ve some minor repairs to do on the Tigerbird & sealing it all over again (only going over the existing coats with more coats). I feels too naked - i don`t mind, but i feel it`s take up mhy sweat too fast - & i`ve mastered the proper technique. Took a while, but like everything: practice makes perfect :D

But for the possibly last 3rd & final bird, either old school or Ox style

I find this curious, as in.. does this really reflect the market for vintage basses now? This asking price for a '64 IV with a broken/repaired neck and in pretty trashed condition?

GIBSON THUNDERBIRD lV BASS - 1964 - SUNBURST - ULTRA RARE VINTAGE GIBSON BASS

And if you thought that was steep - how about a '67 for about the same asking price?

Gibson Thunderbird IV Non-Reverse Bass 1967 "Sunburst"

As a vintage T-bird II owner I've seen the asking price for these basses fluctuate greatly over many years - but these are very high asking prices. Feels like someone is attempting to unload before the vintage market takes another dive. (for maybe the last time)
