Thunderbird Club

In a studio-set vid of the Wailers doing 3 O'clock Road Block (I think that's the one, but same record anyway) Aston is playing a Jazz Bass through an Acoustic 371 rig. Don't know if that means anything, but those guys weren't rich, and there was no Sam Ash in Jamaica, so maybe it does...
This reggae band I’m in isn’t about emulating any particular look, so I’m thinking if you can get deep bass from a jazz, you can get it from a TBird;)

I can probably make some Ampeg gear work. Might need to get something with more watts.

Great song! Brings back memories. I taught myself to play by listening to great songs and this was one of my favorites. In fact I loved playing through the Live album. Killer band.

We played IYC in my high school 'combo' - it was a top 40 hit and that's what we drew from. I think the first song I learned on bass was "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet" by the Blues Magoos. The fact that the song lead with the bass riff hooked me.

Get a Badbird bridge, notch those saddles if necessary.

First: check your neck relief. Fingers on first and last frets on E string. How high off the ninth fret is the string? If it's too much a qualified tech will slightly backbow the neck before tightening the trussrod nut a quarter of a turn. That shouldn't crack your repaired neck while reducing relief and lowering your action.

Lowering the action might reveal the need for leveling or replacing some frets. Routine maintenance.
Thanks- I'll give it a try.

Headroom is reasonable. You can get a good dub sound out of most of what's out there as long as you have decent pa to carry your low end out front. Playing a bass you like is most of what's meaningful.

Some pictures would help. Truss rod may need a slight adjustment, filing saddles is always a option. If the bushings for the anchors are keeping the bridge high you can put the bridge under the bushings in effect bolting the bridge to the bass, however this may take it to low and the you will have to shim bass or treble side maybe both. Of course I recommend a Badbird it does have slightly shorter saddles.
Yeah, I'm trying to leave everything that's 51 y/o in place. Exploring options for now.

Well, here are 3 mediocre pics from my flip phone: 1)at the nut 1118181554-00.jpg 2) 12th fret 1118181557-00.jpg 3)at the bridge(which has a bridge cover) 1118181559-00.jpg Best I can do with what I have.

Hmm. I checked the neck relief and it's quite acceptable at the 9th fret. However, I now can see a slight bow immediately after the 1st fret. I'll run it by the luthier that did the neck fix and see what he thinks. As stated, it's livable-and it'd prolly buzz if I got it much lower. FWIW, I spend very little time above 9-10th fret,(solos only, maybe 2 a night?) so no BFD.

That bass looks like a candidate for a neck reset, you have no place left to go.
Oh, goodie! I'm used to it so I guess I'll leave it alone. One of our guitarists tried it out and commented about the action. I should know better than listening to a guitar player.:smug: <EDIT> I'll kick it around(the idea, Not the '67 NR)

Until the state of FL picks the right 6 numbers(which I have), I s'pose I'll just keep playing it until one of us croaks. Probably me. There was the the fleeting hope/thought that it could be something simple and inexpensive.:banghead:

You must be a "Car Talk" fan ... "yah, it'll cost $500 regardless of what the problem is" (laughter)
